Alex Perry to Arizona State: Sun Devils Land 4-Star CB Prospect

Alec NathanDec 13, 2016

Alex Perry, a heralded 4-star cornerback from Bishop Gorman High School, bolstered Arizona State's secondary Tuesday when he announced his intention to suit up for the Sun Devils in the fall of 2017.

Perry will join his brother, Armand, who's a redshirt sophomore safety at ASU.

One of the premier defensive backs in the country, Perry graded out as the top-ranked cornerback in Nevada and 15th-ranked cornerback overall among all 2017 recruits, according to Scout. Perry is also listed as the 139th-ranked player in the nation in his class.

The recipient of offers from powerhouse programs such as the Oklahoma Sooners, Michigan Wolverines, North Carolina Tar Heels and Oklahoma State Cowboys, among others, Perry has flashed potential as a lockdown corner throughout his high school career.

As Scout's official report noted, Perry "has very good short-area quickness, can change direction and is smooth in his backpedal. He’s aggressive when the ball is in the air and plays with a nice edge to him. He’ll battle you all game long and loves to take on the challenge of covering an opponent's top receiver."

After recording just two pass breakups as a freshman in 2013, Perry started to emerge as a shutdown presence in 2014 with six pass breakups, an interception and 46 total tackles. During his junior season, Perry solidified his status, as quarterbacks shied away from tossing the pigskin his way.

As a result, Perry recorded just three interceptions—one of which he returned for a touchdown—to go with 27 tackles and a sack.

Given the reputation Perry has established over the past few years as one of the nation's premier cover corners, it would be a surprise if he didn't make a leap at the next level as he seeks to continue his ascent to superstardom.

Perry will have to compete for playing time with sophomore Kareem Orr and junior Maurice Chandler at Arizona State. With two seniors, De'Chavon Hayes and Bryson Echols, backing up Chandler, though, Perry should have an opportunity to see the field right away in a limited role.
