Arsenal vs. Chivas Guadalajara: Score, Reaction from 2016 International Friendly

Joseph ZuckerJul 31, 2016

Arsenal picked up their second win of the preseason on Sunday, beating Chivas Guadalajara 3-1 at StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Rob Holding, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Chuba Akpom were the goalscorers for the Gunners in a comprehensive victory.

Although Holding was the scorer, Calum Chambers deserves the lion's share of credit for Arsenal's opening goal in the 33rd minute. Chambers peeled away from his marker to get on the end of Santi Cazorla's free kick delivered on the edge of the six-yard box. Chambers' pass across goal left Holding with an easy finish.

Fox Soccer provided a replay of the goal:

Arsenal shared a photo from Holding's goal celebration:

Theo Walcott nearly doubled the Gunners' lead in the 35th minute. Antonio Rodriguez made a point-blank save to stymie the English attacker.

Despite Chivas taking a one-goal deficit into the halftime break, ESPN FC's Tom Marshall wasn't entirely displeased by what he saw from the club:

However, those defensive deficiencies Marshall alluded to were laid bare early in the second half.

Oxlade-Chamberlain displayed his pace and technical skill as he beat two Chivas players en route to goal in the 50th minute. His cut back to get the ball onto his left foot was a thing of beauty. Fox Soccer provided a replay of the stunning individual effort by the 22-year-old winger:

The Daily Mail's Dominic King thought the goal was part of an encouraging summer for Oxlade-Chamberlain:

Akpom put Arsenal ahead 3-0 in the 56th minute. The 20-year-old didn't have a difficult finish but did well to get into position for Mathieu Debuchy's cross from the right.

AFCPressWatch provided footage of the well-worked goal:

Chivas entered Sunday coming off defeats in which they allowed four goals apiece to Tijuana and Chiapas. For ESPN FC's Cesar Hernandez, the questions regarding their defense weren't going away after surrendering three more goals, albeit in an exhibition match:

Angel Zaldivar pulled a goal back for Chivas in the 74th minute. Debuchy knocked Alejandro Zendejas down in the 18-yard box, which caused the referee to whistle for a foul and point to the penalty spot. The tally at least offered some consolation for Chivas and their supporters, who will want to put the result behind them as quickly as possible.

Arsenal have a few days to rest before their next friendly. They'll travel to Stavanger, Norway, to take on Viking FK on Friday night. The Gunners only have three more friendlies altogether before they open the Premier League season against Liverpool on Aug. 14. Since the club has a relatively light preseason schedule, it will be important for Arsene Wenger's side to make the most of its remaining fixtures.

Following their opener with Liverpool, Arsenal have Leicester City, Watford and Southampton in their next three league matches. While a poor start to the EPL campaign won't doom the Gunners' title hopes, Wenger will want to avoid the extra scrutiny a string of sluggish performances in August and September would inevitably bring.

Post-Match Reaction

Wenger praised Holding after the match, saying the 20-year-old has "intelligence, composure, character," per the club's Twitter account.

Holding isn't likely to feature regularly for the Gunners, barring injuries to Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel Paulista. As Wenger rotates the squad over the course of the 2016/17 season, though, he'll likely look to the Bolton Wanderers academy star to fill in.

Wenger also spoke highly of Cazorla, who was critical in setting up Holding's goal.

"He gives us technical security in midfield," he said, per Arsenal's Twitter account.

Arsenal have a number of creative central midfielders. Granit Xhaka doesn't necessarily fall into that category, but his arrival will mean one of those creative midfielders will have to take a back seat. Wenger will have some decisions to make as he zeroes in on his preferred lineup for the start of the Premier League season.
