College Football Teams with Most Commits on the Opening 2016 Roster

David KenyonJul 5, 2016

The Opening is a premier recruit showcase, but the event also indirectly serves as a feature for college football teams that have received verbal commitments from several top prospects.

In 2016, one program will have a stunning 10 representatives, while six others reached five. It shouldn't be a surprise that the eight teams highlighted are each ranked in the top 10 of the 247Sports composite team rankings.

Plus, this list doesn't include uncommitted prospects or targeted players who are currently pledged elsewhere.

When we look back on The Opening 2016, the following teams will likely include even more members of the showcase roster.

Clemson

247Sports Composite Ranking: 9 | Commits at The Opening: 4

Clemson is sending a modest four commits to Beaverton, Oregon, but the group doesn't lack star power.

Literally.

Hunter Johnson is the top-rated pro-style and overall quarterback in the 2017 cycle. He threw for 2,545 yards and 31 touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions last season.

Fellow 5-star Tee Higgins—who recently revealed his commitment on Bleacher Report—is the No. 1 player from Tennessee and the 15th-ranked player nationally.

In wide receiver Amari Rodgers and offensive lineman Matt Bockhorst, the Tigers also have a pair of 4-star pledges.

Florida State

247Sports Composite Ranking: 10 | Commits at The Opening: 5

Although Florida State is one spot lower than Clemson in 247Sports' team rankings, the Seminoles have one more representative at The Opening.

Stanford Samuels, a 5-star cornerback and FSU legacy, committed to Jimbo Fisher and Co. in mid-June. A 6'2", 175-pounder, he's the nation's No. 3 corner and No. 23 player overall.

The other four commits are each 4-star talents. Wide receiver DJ Matthews is the No. 61 prospect , while defensive tackle Ja'len Parks (114) and Zaquandre White (122) check in just outside of the top 100.

Cory Durden rounds out the bunch. The in-state defensive tackle recently earned his fourth composite star.

Michigan

3 of 8

247Sports Composite Ranking: 5 | Commits at The Opening: 5

When Michigan added Brandon Peters in the 2016 class, the common thought was Jim Harbaugh signed his quarterback of the future. Peters is going to have some excellent competition soon.

Dylan McCaffreyyes, the brother of Stanford star Christiangave his pledge to the Wolverines. McCaffrey tossed 27 touchdowns and just four interceptions last year and is the country's No. 2 quarterback.

Best of all for the Wolverines, all five commits are on Team Hypercool during the 7-on-7 session.

Running backs O'maury Samuels and A.J. Dillon will flank McCaffrey. Four-star linebacker Josh Ross and fast-rising 3-star cornerback Benjamin St-Juste are on defense.

Georgia

4 of 8

247Sports Composite Ranking: 3 | Commits at The Opening: 6

The first of three SEC programs on the list, Georgia has six 4-star prospects at the showcase—and that doesn't even include Robert Beal, a 5-star defensive end.

Richard LeCounte III and Jake Fromm—a couple of top-50 playershighlight the collection. LeCounte is the nation's second-rated safety, and Fromm is the No. 3 pro-style quarterback.

Complementing the duo are cornerback William Poole III and offensive tackle D'Antne Demery, who are both ranked in the top 100.

Linebacker Jaden Hunter and wide receiver Trey Blount complete the cast of potential future Bulldogs.

LSU

5 of 8

247Sports Composite Ranking: 6 | Commits at The Opening: 6

Of LSU's 10 verbal pledges ranked in the 247Sports composite top 400, six received an invitation for The Opening.

Tyler Shelvin is the lone 5-star. He's a 6'2", 329-pounder and the second-best defensive tackle in 2017.

Offensive lineman Austin Deculus and wide receiver Jhamon Ausbon are the Tigers' 4-star commits, while quarterback Myles Brennan, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and offensive lineman Saahdiq Charles compose the unit of 3-stars.

There's no doubt LSU's representatives will be shamelessly recruiting Dylan Moses, Marvin Wilson, Grant Delpit and 2018 prospect Patrick Surtain Jr., among others.

Alabama

6 of 8

247Sports Composite Ranking: 2 | Commits at The Opening: 7

It's fitting that Alabama—which is riding a streak of six straight No. 1 classes—boasts the top-ranked prospect in Beaverton.

Najee Harris committed to the Tide in April 2015. During the running back's last two high-school seasons, he's amassed a staggering 5,007 yards and scored 59 touchdowns. Fellow 5-star and offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood will join Harris.

Unsurprisingly, the remainder of Alabama's pledges are also highly rated.

Tua Tagovailoa checks in as the second-best dual-threat quarterback, then VanDarius Cowan and Markail Benton are the Nos. 5 and 6 outside linebackers, respectively. Xavier McKinney stands as the 11th-ranked safety, and Tyrell Shavers is the No. 22 wide receiver.

Oklahoma

7 of 8

247Sports Composite Ranking: 4 | Commits at The Opening: 8

Perhaps a bit of a surprise to the casual recruiting followers, Oklahoma is loaded with prospects at The Opening.

At No. 120 overall, inside linebacker Levi Draper is the highest-rated commit in a group of seven 4-stars and one 3-star. Tre Brown, Chris Robison, Robert Barnes and Justin Broiles are each ranked between 171 and 177 nationally.

Jalen Reagor and Trajan Bandy complete the 4-stars, and tight end Grant Calcaterra—who caught 50 passes for 950 yards and nine touchdowns last year—concludes the assemblage.

Bob Stoops and the Sooners are in excellent position to secure their first top-10 recruiting ranking since a No. 4 finish in 2010.

Ohio State

8 of 8

247Sports Composite Ranking: 1 | Commits at The Opening: 10

Urban Meyer and his staff are crushing the 2017 recruiting cycle. That early success will be exemplified in Beaverton.

Each of the Buckeyes' three 5-stars earned a spot. Offensive tackle Josh Myers is the country's No. 4 prospect, while cornerback Shaun Wade and O-lineman Wyatt Davis are 13th and 14th, respectively.

Tate Martell—the top-rated dual-threat quarterbackheadlines an excellent bunch of seven 4-stars.

In addition to Martell, that group includes three other top-100 prospects in safety Isaiah Pryor, all-purpose back J.K. Dobbins and defensive tackle Haskell Garrett. Brendon White, Marcus Williamson and Antjuan Simmons are also going to The Opening.

If any program ends Alabama's streak of No. 1 classes in 2017, it's going to be Ohio State.
