Wales finished atop Group B at the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament after defeating Russia on Monday, while England disappointed with a draw against Slovakia.

Here's a breakdown of the day's action.

England came into Monday knowing a win would get them top placement in Group B and a navigable matchup in the next round. But the Three Lions couldn't solve Slovakia's resolute defense and came away with a scoreless draw, leaving them in second place in Group B.

Slovakia, meanwhile, gave themselves an excellent chance to advance as a third-place finisher.

But while they will be thrilled with their effort, England will be lamenting their own. Phil McNulty of BBC Sport put some of the onus on the starting lineup that manager Roy Hodgson selected:

Indeed, leaving Wayne Rooney on the bench to start the match and making a number of other changes will surely be questioned throughout the week.

Oliver Holt of the Daily Mail wasn't surprised by the result, however:

The English couldn't have controlled the match more thoroughly, holding 61 percent of possession and outshooting Slovakia 29-4 (5-2 on target), per WhoScored.com. But the Slovaks stymied England's attacks over and over.

"We tried time and time again, and they shut the door in our face," England defender Gary Cahill said after the match, per the ESPN broadcast. "Disappointing for us tonight, to be honest."

England had a brilliant chance to go ahead in the 17th minute, as Jordan Henderson played a fantastic ball over the top to Jamie Vardy, who used his speed to beat the defense and free himself in the box. Goalkeeper Matus Kozacik saved Vardy's effort on goal, however, and the match remained scoreless.

Adam Lallana had the next-best opportunity on goal in the 36th minute, ripping a shot from just inside the box that forced a diving save from Kozacik.

While England couldn't get on the board, they dominated the opening frame, holding 55 percent of possession, outshooting Slovakia 10-1 (2-0 on goal) and completing 89 percent of their passes, per WhoScored.com.

Football pundit Gary Lineker suspected England would have their breakthrough:

Not on this day.

In fact, it was Slovakia who came out on the front foot in the second half. Keeper Joe Hart was called into duty and had to save a close-range effort from Robert Mak to preserve the scoreless draw in the 53rd minute.

From there, England controlled the game but couldn't find the last bit of class needed to get on the scoresheet.

While the loss will be disappointing, all is not lost for England, as they now await the runner-up of Group F. That could be Portugal, but it could also be Hungary, Iceland or even Austria.

France might be looming in the quarter-finals if England get out of the round of 16. So without question, England made their long-term journey to a European championship more difficult on Monday, but broadcaster James Pearce was looking on the bright side of life:

Slovakia don't know yet if they will advance, though four points seem likely to earn them a berth as one of the top four third-place finishers. Their next match will surely be a challenge, of course, as they would face a winner from either Group C or D, but the Slovakians have proved they are not a team to be trifled with.

Wales Beat Russia

In Wales, the stories will read that the Welsh were spectacular on Monday. And that they were. In Russia, the papers will state that the Russians were dreadful. And they won't be wrong either.

By the time the final whistle blew, Wales had secured a 3-0 win over a listless Russia team that was one of the biggest disappointments at this tournament. But it's hard to ignore just how important the result was for Wales, as they clinched Group B and—perhaps even more importantly—finished above England.

Paul Hayward of the Telegraph perhaps summed it up best:

Wales dominated nearly every metric, holding 51 percent of possession and outshooting the Russians 19-12 (12-2 on goal), according to WhoScored.com. It was about as clinical a victory as you'll see.

And it didn't take Wales long to open the scoring. Joe Allen played a brilliant pass through the center of the Russian defense to a sprinting Aaron Ramsey, who found himself alone on goal. The Arsenal man chipped a crafty shot above the onrushing Igor Akinfeev into the middle of the goal, giving Wales the lead in the 10th minute.

It was a great piece of play all around, as Oliver Kay of the Times of London noted:

Ramsey's part in the goal was worth extra praise, however, and Taylor Twellman of ESPN provided it:

The party kept going for Wales in the 20th minute. This time, Gareth Bale appeared ready make a pass, but the ball deflected off of a Russian player and found its way to Neil Taylor, who had nothing but open space down the left flank. Akinfeev saved his initial shot, but the rebound bounced directly back to Taylor, and he buried his second effort.

It was the best of times for Wales and the worst of times for Russia, as Nick Ames of the Guardian tweeted:

The goal was another reminder that Bale, the top superstar for Wales, has not had to carry the team on his back at these Euros, as Wyre Davies of BBC News noted:

Bale had the chance to make it 3-0 in the 30th minute, as he hit Russia on the counter-attack virtually by himself. He took on two defenders, easily beating the first by cutting inside onto his left foot and creating space to take a shot. Akinfeev was well-positioned, however, and made the save.

Wales completed their thumping with a third goal in the second half, and Ramsey was again in the center of it. This time, the Russian defense collapsed around the midfield star, and he slipped a pass through down the left flank to Bale, who chipped a deft lob over Akinfeev.

That put the Real Madrid dynamo in rarefied air, per ESPN Stats & Info:

It also was another justification of his superstar status, per Matt Jones of Bleacher Report UK:

The win coupled with England's draw against Slovakia means Wales should get a favorable matchup in the next round—a third-place finisher from Group A, C or D. That, in turn, means Wales could be headed for a quarter-final berth, which would be a major accomplishment.

Few teams will take the Welsh lightly with Bale and Ramsey leading the way.

For Russia, meanwhile, these Euros were a dramatic disappointment. Changes may be coming after this showing, as they went down against Wales with barely more than a whimper following a draw with England and a loss to Slovakia.
