Euro 2016 Results: Sunday Group Scores, Highlights and Twitter Reaction

Brian MarronJun 19, 2016

France drew 0-0 with Switzerland for a first-place finish in Group A, as Albania kept their slim hopes alive by beating Romania 1-0 for third place at the 2016 UEFA European Championship on Sunday.

With six points, France just needed one more to clinch the top spot ahead of the knockout stage, while Switzerland needed a victory to win the group or a draw to establish themselves as the No. 2 team in Group A.

Albania could still advance if they finish among the top four third-place teams, but that will be determined after group play ends.

France Draws With Switzerland

In a battle between the top two teams in Group A, neither side scored in a goalless stalemate.

Although the result was not ideal, France played their most complete game of the tournament thus far.

Les Bleus needed late goals to squeak by Albania and Romania, but France looked locked-in from the opening kickoff. The French were able to create chances seemingly every time they got the ball, but they just could not put one in the back of the net.

Star midfielder Paul Pogba was dominant in the first half, and he could have scored twice to put France ahead.

The official Euro 2016 Twitter account gave a picture of one chance, while beIN Sports provided a look at the other:

The hosts were not deterred, as they proved aggressive for the remainder of the match. They only finished with 41 percent possession, but it was not indicative of who manipulated the pace of play. Switzerland completed mostly low-risk passes, as they feared giving France another opportunity on the counter.

France finished with 13 total shots and 10 corners.

Antoine Griezmann and Dimitri Payet had golden chances in the second half, but they could not convert. The West Ham United man crashed a volley onto the crossbar for what would have been one of the goals of the tournament.

Les Bleus have to be pleased with their performance despite not being able to sweep the group. Even though they drew, France looked better than in their first two games and appear to be a threat to win the tournament moving forward.

Switzerland have some work to do, as the defense gave up too many quality chances while the attack did not generate enough of their own. The Swiss could steal a game in the next round, but that seems to be their ceiling at this point.

Albania Defeats Romania 1-0

In a game that Romania had to win, an opportunistic Albania side kept themselves alive to advance past the group stage.

The Romanians were the stronger team, controlling possession and completing far more passes. They failed to convert their possession into goals, as Albania's counterattacking was the difference.

With the first half nearing an end, Armando Sadiku headed Albania ahead. ESPN FC noted that the goal was historic for the team, and it also gave a link to watch the strike:

Albania celebrated like they had won the tournament, per the Euro 2016 Twitter page:

Romania continued to dictate the pace of the game, but Albania still created chances on the break. In the end, Sadiku's tally was enough to give the Albanians their first win of the tournament.

The final stats saw Romania finish with 59 percent possession, 439 completed passes and eight shots on target. Albania only connected on 217 passes, but they were able keep up with Romania's scoring chances with six shots on target.

With the loss, Romania were eliminated from Euro 2016. They played well in the group to nearly draw with France and the same with Switzerland, but the end result is disappointing. Their inability to convert chances ultimately did the Romanians in, which will surely eat at them as they watch the knockout rounds.

Albania have also played well, but Sunday's win gave them their first points of the competition and first win in any major event, per UEFA. Advancing to the next round would be a huge victory for a team that was an afterthought in Group A heading into the tournament.
