While Colombia celebrated the win, NBC Sports' Raphielle Johnson and CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora saw it as a heartbreaking way to go out for Peru:
After 60 minutes of play, the Peru that shocked Brazil was but a distant memory. Colombia was the more aggressive offensive team, holding a 7-1 shot advantage.
James Rodriguez had a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the 22nd minute. Univision Deportes provided a replay of the unlucky strike that almost found the net:
Other than that shot, MetLife Stadium was the host to a lackluster match that was not meant for offensive explosions. The lack of excitement couldn't have sat well with the New Jersey crowd, which was heavily anticipating the matchup, per Bryan Armen Graham of the Guardian:

Only four times in 52 career matches had Peru and Colombia played to a scoreless draw coming into Friday, per ESPN Stats & Info.
Colombia had a shot to break the ice in the 84th minute, but Jeison Murillo's header went wide. Murillo had another chance off a corner kick in the 90th minute, but Peru goalkeeper Christian Ramos came up with his first save of the match when his team need him the most.
Peru also had a chance to win it at the end on a corner of its own, but it wasn't meant to be. For the first time in the tournament, penalty kicks decided the match.
Rodriguez began the penalty-kick round by making sure he didn't hit the post a second time. He drilled the round's first goal for a 1-0 lead. Raul Ruidiaz responded by going to the top-right corner to tie it up.
Juan Cuadrado easily tapped the ball into the bottom-right corner, only for Renato Tapia to respond and level the round at 2-2.
After Dayro Moreno gave Colombia a 3-2 lead, goalkeeper David Ospina denied Miguel Trauco's shot, giving the Colombians a chance to take control.
Sebastian Perez then knocked the ball into the back of the net, giving his team a 4-2 lead, via Univision Deportes:
Unfortunately for Peru, Christian Cueva's shot sailed well over the net to end the match and put Colombia into the semifinals for the first time in 12 years.
It was a lackluster match that didn't provide excitement until the final moments, but Colombia maintained poise and made the necessary plays to win, while Peru couldn't capitalize after knocking off one of the best teams in the world.
Colombia will face the winner of Saturday's match between Mexico and Chile on June 22.
