Colombia Defeats Peru in Penalty Kicks, 4-2
Colombia was able to outlast Peru in a relatively uneventful affair that seemed destined for penalty kicks from the start.
After regulation ended with both teams scoreless, Christian Cueva and Miguel Trauco missed their penalty kicks for Peru, and Colombia was perfect from the penalty spot.
Here is a look at Peru's decisive misfire, courtesy of Fox Soccer:
The game lacked much flow, as each side constantly launched long passes through the air in an attempt to get a fortunate bounce en route to a goal.
Colombia, with its bevy of offensive talent, was unable to sustain any offense. Peru seemed content to sit back and close down the Colombians' space rather than pushing forward and attacking.
Featuring dangerous players such as Carlos Bacca, Juan Cuadrado and James Rodriguez, Colombia was favored heading into the match as the third-ranked team in the world. However, the Colombians looked disorganized and lacked confidence with the ball.
Rather than opening up the field and using some quick passing plays to spring Cuadrado down the wing, Colombia was unimaginative and bunched up, which allowed Peru to conserve its energy for the occasional counter, which did not come often.
The best scoring chance in regulation from either side came from Rodriguez in the 22nd minute, as the Real Madrid star clanked the iron on a long-distance finesse shot.
Fox Soccer provided a look at the play:
This proved to be the main highlight of the match, as both sides continued to exchange possession thanks to sloppy passing and constant clearances.
However, Peru nearly broke the tie late in stoppage time with this header, courtesy of Fox Soccer:
Goalkeeper David Ospina showed tremendous reflexes to deflect the ball that seemed destined to hit just below the crossbar.
Peru was overmatched against the top teams in the tournament, but it nearly advanced to its second straight semifinal. The Peruvians have a winning formula, and their performance and grit should be commended.
Colombia will play the winner of Saturday's match between Chile and Mexico on June 22 in Chicago, but it needs to find some rhythm offensively if it wants to outscore its next opponent. Chile and Mexico are both playing well up front, so Colombia will have a massive challenge to overcome to advance to the final.
