Mets Reportedly Expected to Land Reyes

Saturday, June 25

Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reported Friday multiple sources said the Mets expect to sign Reyes as soon as Saturday once he clears waivers. ESPN.com's Adam Rubin confirmed DiComo's report Saturday, adding that Reyes is available to sign with New York at 1 p.m. ET.

Earlier Friday, DiComo reported the Mets are exploring all options for Reyes, even the idea of moving him to the outfield.

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal, citing major league sources, reported June 20 the "Mets are debating internally whether signing [Reyes] would be worth the public-relations fallout."

MLB Network's Jon Heyman reported June 15 the Mets weren't interested in Reyes.

Reyes Trade Market is 'Slim'

Thursday, June 23

Heyman reported, "Word is, the trade market for [Reyes] is said to be 'small,' with the chances for a trade, as of Wednesday afternoon, said to be 'slim.'"

Royals Reportedly in on Reyes

Thursday, June 16

Alex Cora of ESPN reported the Kansas City Royals are considering signing Reyes to play second base.

Yankees Not Interested in Reyes

Wednesday, June 15

Heyman reported the New York Yankees can be ruled out as a possible destination for Reyes.

Reyes Would Bring Veteran Presence to New Team

The 33-year-old veteran played for the Mets from 2003 to 2011, receiving four All-Star bids, leading the National League in stolen bases three times and winning an NL batting title in that span.

Per Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post, the Rockies had 10 days to either release or trade Reyes and are due to pay him $41 million in salary.

Gifted as he may be, Reyes is not the player he once was and can't swipe bases at near the rate he used to. His defense is rather poor as well—his ultimate zone rating of minus-6.6 was fourth-worst for his position last season, per FanGraphs.

Reyes' outlook to continue his career at the MLB level is bound to improve if and when he hits the open market. Then a team can have him at a massive bargain compared to the money he commands at the moment.
