Re-Drafting 2018 MLB Draft With Tarik Skubal, Cal Raleigh, Brice Turang, More
The 2018 MLB draft was headlined by right-hander Casey Mize, but it was another Detroit Tigers selection who has developed into arguably the best pitcher in baseball as Tarik Skubal was a ninth-round pick.
Both of those pitchers found their way into our full first-round redraft, along with plenty of other stars in a class that was loaded with value throughout the first 10 rounds.
In this hypothetical 2018 redraft, every MLB team's current roster remains intact, with the only change being a re-do of their 2018 first-round selection.
With that in mind, roster mechanics and organizational fit played a much bigger role here than they would in a traditional mock draft when teams are generally just looking to add the best available talent.
The Detroit Tigers are on the clock...
1. Detroit Tigers: LHP Tarik Skubal
1 of 31
Original Pick:ย RHP Casey Mize
Skubal's Original Draft Position:ย No. 255 overall
The Tigers waited all the way until the ninth round to select Tarik Skubal out of Seattle University in 2018, but this time around he is the first name off the board as arguably the best pitcher in baseball.
With back-to-back Cy Young Awards in his pocket and a strong start to 2026 before undergoing elbow surgery to remove loose bodies, he is firmly established as a bona fide ace. A massive payday awaits this offseason when he hits the open market for the first time.
Original top pick Casey Mize has had a productive career, even earning an All-Star nod last year, and he will still be part of the first-round picture in this redraft.
2. San Francisco Giants: C Cal Raleigh
2 of 31
Original Pick:ย C Joey Bart
Raleigh's Original Draft Position:ย No. 90 overall
The Giants thought they found their catcher of the future and heir to Buster Posey when they selected Joey Bart with the No. 2 overall pick, and this gives them an opportunity to right that wrong.
Cal Raleigh was the seventh catcher taken in the 2018 draft class, but he has developed into one of the greatest power-hitting backstops in MLB history. After back-to-back 30-homer seasons in 2023 and 2024, he exploded with a 60-homer, 125-RBI campaign last year. A slow start this year and an oblique strain is not enough to erase his fantastic three-year run as an impact performer.
Bart played in exactly one full season's worth of games for the Giants, hitting .219/.288/.335 for a 75 OPS+ with 11 home runs, 38 RBI and 0.7 WAR. He caught on with the Pirates after he was cut loose, and has been a serviceable platoon option.
3. Philadelphia Phillies: RHP Joe Ryan
3 of 31
Original Pick:ย 3B Alec Bohm
Ryan's Original Draft Position:ย No. 210 overall
Since becoming a full-time member of the Twins rotation in 2022, Joe Ryan quietly ranks among the MLB leaders in strikeouts (768, 10th) and WAR (12.5, 18th) while posting a 3.72 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over 685 innings.
The 29-year-old was an All-Star for the first time last season, and he has emerged as the ace of the staff in Minnesota while pitching well enough to return to the Midsummer Classic for a second year in a row.
Third baseman Alec Bohm has never quite lived up to the expectations that came with being the No. 3 overall selection, despite carving out an everyday role at the hot corner.
4. Chicago White Sox: 2B Brice Turang
4 of 31
Original Pick:ย 2B Nick Madrigal
Turang's Original Draft Position:ย No. 21 overall
Brice Turang was a 4.8-WAR player in 2024 on the strength of his glove work, which won him NL Platinum Glove honors, but he emerged as a more well-rounded player last season with a breakout performance at the plate.
He posted a 120 OPS+ with 48 extra-base hits, 18 home runs, 81 RBI, 24 steals and 5.5 WAR last year, and earned a spot on Team USA for the World Baseball Classic as a result.
An elite hit tool coming out of Oregon State made Nick Madrigal one of the safest picks in the 2018 class, but a punchless .343 slugging percentage over 950 plate appearances ended up significantly capping his ceiling.
5. Cincinnati Reds: 2B Nico Hoerner
5 of 31
Original Pick:ย IF Jonathan India
Hoerner's Original Draft Position:ย No. 24 overall
Nico Hoerner was the first player from the 2018 draft to reach the majors, filling in for an injured Javier Baez at shortstop down the stretch in 2019 before taking over as the club's primary second baseman the following year.
Now a two-time Gold Glove winner and .280/.339/.382 career hitter, he has piled up 23.6 WAR over 763 career games to lead all players from the 2018 draft class in overall value.
The Reds got immediate impact from Jonathan India at second base when he won 2021 NL Rookie of the Year honors, but he has not matched that level of production in the years since, so Hoerner would stabilize the position he was supposed to occupy.
6. New York Mets: RHP Logan Gilbert
6 of 31
Original Pick:ย OF Jarred Kelenic
Gilbert's Original Draft Position:ย No. 14 overall
With three straight seasons of at least 32 starts and 180 innings pitched from 2022-24, Logan Gilbert quickly established himself as a durable option in the Seattle rotation while logging a 3.38 ERA and 112 ERA+ during that stretch.
He was an All-Star and finished sixth in AL Cy Young voting in 2023 when he led the league in innings pitched (208.2) and WHIP (0.89), and he would have been a huge addition the Mets in recent years as they have struggled to find consistent innings in the rotation.
That said, it's fair to wonder in this hypothetical if he might wind up in Seattle anyway, considering Jarred Kelenic was traded to the Mariners as part of the blockbuster deal to acquire Edwin Dรญaz and Robinson Canรณ.
7. San Diego Padres: OF Steven Kwan
7 of 31
Original Pick:ย LHP Ryan Weathers
Kwan's Original Draft Position:ย No. 163 overall
Steven Kwan spent his college career at Oregon State overshadowed by No. 4 overall pick Nick Madrigal, but he has developed into the far better pro while utilizing a similar skill set as a contact-oriented table-setter.
Kwan has won four straight AL Gold Glove Awards in left field since debuting in 2022, and his 16.6 WAR during that four-year stretch trails only Aaron Judge (35.8), Juan Soto (24.9), Mookie Betts (24.8), Julio Rodrรญguez (22.6) and Kyle Tucker (20.1) among all outfielders.
As is so often the case with Padres prospects, Ryan Weathers was traded to the Marlins before establishing himself in the big leagues. He has a 4.67 ERA and 310 strikeouts in 345 career innings and is now pitching for the Yankees.
8. Atlanta Braves: SS Jeremy Peรฑa
8 of 31
Original Pick:ย RHP Carter Stewart
Peรฑa's Original Draft Position:ย No. 102 overall
Aside from a solid 2023 season by Orlando Arcia, shortstop has been a clear weakness for the Braves since Dansby Swanson departed in free agency, and the organization is still lacking a clear long-term answer at the position.
Jeremy Peรฑa burst onto the scene in 2022 with a 5.0-WAR season that culminated in ALCS and World Series MVP honors, and he had a career year at the plate last season when he hit .304/.363/.477 for a 133 OPS+ with 49 extra-base hits and 20 steals.
The Braves offered Carter Stewart a below-slot bonus after his predraft physical revealed a wrist issue, and rather than accepting, he signed a six-year, $7 million deal with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in the Japanese League. He has a 3.05 ERA in 483.2 innings in the NPB.
9. Athletics: LHP Shane McClanahan
9 of 31
Original Pick:ย OF Kyler Murray
McClanahan's Original Draft Position:ย No. 31 overall
Despite missing the entire 2024 and 2025 seasons recovering from Tommy John surgery and addressing a nerve issue in his left triceps, Shane McClanahan has still provided as much ace-level production as any pitcher in the 2018 class.
He was an All-Star in 2022 and 2023 when he posted a 2.85 ERA with 315 strikeouts in 281.1 innings, and he has returned strong this year after that long layoff with a 2.45 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 55 innings over 11 starts.
The Athletics rolled the dice on two-sport star Kyler Murray, only to watch him return to campus in the fall, win the 2018 Heisman Trophy and go No. 1 overall in the 2019 NFL draft, leaving his baseball career behind.
10. Pittsburgh Pirates: OF Jarren Duran
10 of 31
Original Pick:ย OF Travis Swaggerty
Duran's Original Draft Position:ย No. 220 overall
Jarren Duran was originally drafted as a second baseman by the Red Sox, but he has developed into a solid defensive outfielder and a well-rounded offensive player with a good mix of speed, on-base ability and extra-base pop.
Even with a .218 average amid a slow start to the 2026 campaign, he has 10 home runs, 10 steals and 1.1 WAR over 54 games, and the previous two seasons suggest there is positive regression to come.
The Pirates expected to get something similar to what Duran has become when they took South Alabama outfielder Travis Swaggerty. He has hit just .247/.338/.381 over 1,451 plate appearances in the minors, and he is 1-for-9 with four strikeouts in his brief MLB action.
11. Baltimore Orioles: RHP Drew Rasmussen
11 of 31
Original Pick:ย RHP Grayson Rodriguez
Rasmussen's Original Draft Position:ย No. 185 overall
Since joining the Rays in the deal that sent Willy Adames from Tampa Bay to Milwaukee in 2021, right-hander Drew Rasmussen has a 2.81 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 437 strikeouts in 487.1 innings.
The 30-year-old has reached 150 innings in a season just once in his career, but his frontline-caliber production when healthy would be a major boon to the Orioles starting staff.
Grayson Rodriguez developed into arguably the top pitching prospect in baseball during his time in the Baltimore system, and he has shown flashes in the majors. He has a 4.52 ERA in 256.2 innings in the majors, and joined the Angels during the offseason in exchange for Taylor Ward.
12. Toronto Blue Jays: RHP Braxton Ashcraft
12 of 31
Original Pick:ย SS Jordan Groshans
Ashcraft's Original Draft Position:ย No. 51 overall
Braxton Ashcraft was given a long developmental runway in the Pittsburgh farm system, as he did not make his MLB debut until last season when he broke into the majors as a reliever before eventually shifting into the rotation.
Now in his first season as a full-time starter, he has a 2.77 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 81 strikeouts in 74.2 innings and could be headed for an All-Star selection. With a 3.03 FIP and elite stuff that includes an upper 90s fastball and eye-popping whiff rates on his curveball (41.9%) and slider (34.9%), he looks like the real deal.
Jordan Groshans has a .728 OPS over 2,421 plate appearances in the minors, and he is currently suiting up for Atlanta's Double-A affiliate.
13. Miami Marlins: IF/OF Brendan Donovan
13 of 31
Original Pick:ย OF Connor Scott
Donovan's Original Draft Position:ย No. 213 overall
Cut from the same cloth as Ben Zobrist, Chris Taylor and other valuable super-utility players, Brendan Donovan has logged an excellent .282/.362/.413 line and 119 OPS+ over five seasons in the majors.
Those strong offensive numbers, coupled with the fact that he has made double-digit starts in his career at first base, second base, shortstop, third base, left field and right field, makes him a plug-and-play contributor on any roster.
Not counting Carter Stewart who didn't sign or Kyler Murray who pivoted to football, Connor Scott is the highest pick in the 2018 draft class to never reach the majors. He is currently in his fifth season at the Double-A level.
14. Seattle Mariners: RHP Kyle Bradish
14 of 31
Original Pick:ย RHP Logan Gilbert
Bradish's Original Draft Position:ย No. 121 overall
Faced with no longer having Logan Gilbert in this hypothetical since he went off the board at No. 6 overall, Kyle Bradish is a suitable replacement in Seattle's stacked starting rotation.
The 29-year-old had a 2.83 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 168 strikeouts in 168.2 innings during the 2023 season to finish fourth in AL Cy Young voting. Injuries have limited him to 136.2 innings in the three years since, but he is back healthy and shaking off some rust in 2026.
After a slow start to the season, he has a 1.72 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 30 strikeouts in 31.1 innings over his last five outings, which helps solidify his spot in the middle of this first-round redraft.
15. Texas Rangers: RHP Davis Martin
15 of 31
Original Pick:ย RHP Cole Winn
Martin's Original Draft Position:ย No. 408 overall
With a 2.61 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 73 strikeouts in 72.1 innings, Davis Martin has been one of the biggest breakout pitchers of the 2026 season so far while emerging as the ace of the staff for an upstart White Sox team.
Those numbers are backed by a 2.44 FIP, and he has used a dynamic six-pitch repertoire to consistently keep hitters off balance. His late-bloomer profile lines up well with the Rangers aging starting rotation, which is fronted by 37-year-old Jacob deGrom and 36-year-old Nathan Eovaldi.
Cole Winn finally broke through as a key piece of the Rangers bullpen last season with a 1.51 ERA in 33 appearances, though he failed to match that success this season before landing on the injured list with arm fatigue.
16. Tampa Bay Rays: C Ryan Jeffers
16 of 31
Original Pick:ย LHP Matthew Liberatore
Jeffers' Original Draft Position:ย No. 59 overall
The Rays' decades-long search for a franchise catcher is a recurring theme in these redrafts, and the board lines up nicely here for them to take one of baseball's most underrated backstops.
With a 109 OPS+ and 10.2 career WAR, Ryan Jeffers has been a steady contributor for the Twins since debuting in 2020. He had a 21-homer season two years ago, and currently sports a 163 OPS+ through 148 plate appearances in a contract year.
Left-hander Matthew Liberatore was memorably flipped to the Cardinals in the deal to acquire Randy Arozarena, and he has developed into a solid rotation piece in St. Louis.
17. Los Angeles Angels: LHP Matthew Liberatore
17 of 31
Original Pick:ย OF Jordyn Adams
Liberatore's Original Draft Position:ย No. 16 overall
The fifth of five high school pitchers taken inside the first 20 picks in the 2018 draft, left-hander Matthew Liberatore has taken some time to develop into a quality big leaguer, but he is starting to deliver in his top prospect pedigree.
The 26-year-old bounced between the rotation and bullpen during his first three seasons in the majors, but since the start of the 2025 campaign he has a 4.25 ERA in 213.2 innings over 41 starts. That's more than good enough to make him a clear upgrade in the Angels rotation.
Jordyn Adams actually just made headlines, though not for his baseball career. After being released by the Brewers organization, he enrolled at SMU with plans to play football. The 24-year-old was a 4-star recruit on the gridiron out of high school.
18. Kansas City Royals: 2B Xavier Edwards
18 of 31
Original Pick:ย RHP Brady Singer
Edwards' Original Draft Position:ย No. 38 overall
The Royals held the No. 18, 33, 34 and 40 overall selections in the 2018 draft, and they used all of them on pitching, including Brady Singer who was eventually traded to the Reds for Jonathan India.
This redraft gives them a chance to skip a few steps in the quest to address second base by taking Xavier Edwards, who has developed into one of the most productive players in the Marlins lineup.
Still only 26 years old and fresh off a 3.3-WAR season in 2025, he is hitting .309/.395/.470 for a 147 OPS+ with 2.7 WAR in 62 games as he eyes a potential All-Star selection.
19. St. Louis Cardinals: RHP Casey Mize
19 of 31
Original Pick:ย 3B Nolan Gorman
Mize's Original Draft Position:ย No. 1 overall
Armed with a mid-90s fastball and a lethal splitter, Casey Mize was the consensus top talent in the 2018 draft class and went No. 1 overall to the Tigers after a standout junior season at Auburn.
His developmental path has not been a linear one, as early struggles and Tommy John surgery in 2022 had him teetering on the edge of bust status, but he was an All-Star last season and has a 2.27 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 47.2 innings through his first 11 starts this year.
Nolan Gorman still has some intriguing power potential, and we'll talk about him a bit later in this redraft, but for a Cardinals team that has been hunting for quality innings the last few years Mize is a better fit.
20. Minnesota Twins: LHP Kris Bubic
20 of 31
Original Pick:ย OF Trevor Larnach
Bubic's Original Draft Position:ย No. 40 overall
Things didn't quite click for Kris Bubic in a starting role early in his career, but he broke through as a reliever in 2024 and that carried over to an All-Star campaign when he returned to the rotation last year.
He had a 2.55 ERA in 116.1 innings before the injury bug bit again and his 2025 ended prematurely, but he has shown enough potential when healthy to be a first-round caliber talent in this redraft. With Joe Ryan scooped up with the No. 3 overall pick in this redraft, he would provide a quality replacement in the Minnesota rotation.
Trevor Larnach has a 103 OPS+ in 1,838 career plate appearances in the majors, and he tallied 24 doubles, 17 home runs and 60 RBI last year, but his value has been limited to what he does in the batter's box.
21. Milwaukee Brewers: 3B Nolan Gorman
21 of 31
Original Pick:ย 2B Brice Turang
Gorman's Original Draft Position:ย No. 19 overall
Nolan Gorman was billed as having some of the best raw power in the 2018 draft class, and he debuted with a 111 OPS+ and 41 home runs in 208 games over his first two years in the majors.
Over the past three seasons, his production has dipped to a .205/.285/.377 line and 87 OPS+ with a strikeout rate hovering near 35 percent, but he is still just 26 years old and finally playing his natural position at third base.
The hot corner has been a hole for the Brewers for years, and while the Cardinals asked Gorman to learn second base in deference to Nolan Arenado, he would not have encountered that developmental speed bump in Milwaukee.
22. Colorado Rockies: RHP Taj Bradley
22 of 31
Original Pick:ย LHP Ryan Rolison
Bradley's Original Draft Position:ย No. 150 overall
If one player outside the top 20 in the redraft is capable of vaulting into the top 10 in the coming years, it's Taj Bradley, and he is starting to hint at realizing what has long been significant upside on the mound.
A top prospect in Tampa Bay who took his lumps but occasionally flashed dominance, he was traded to the Twins last summer for reliever Griffin Jax shortly after being demoted to the minors. Through 10 starts this season, he has a 3.21 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 65 strikeouts in 56 innings, and that would easily make him the Rockies best pitcher.
Left-hander Ryan Rolison looked like one of the more polished college arms in the 2018 class coming out of Ole Miss, but he didn't reach the majors until 2025 when he struggled to a 7.02 ERA in 31 appearances out of the bullpen. He has found a bit more success this year working out of the Cubs pen.
23. New York Yankees: LHP Alex Vesia
23 of 31
Original Pick:ย C/IF Anthony Seigler
Vesia's Original Draft Position:ย No. 507 overall
For all the high-profile talent on the Dodgers roster, left-hander Alex Vesia has been one of their most important players the last few years as a consistently reliable late-inning option out of the bullpen.
In six years with the Dodgers since he was acquired from the Marlins in an under-the-radar deal, he has a 2.63 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 12.2 K/9 with 11 saves and 83 holds in 321 appearances. Those contributions would be valuable in any bullpen in baseball, including a Yankees relief corps that has endured significant turnover.
Anthony Seigler hit .194/.292/.210 in 73 plate appearances with the Brewers last season in his first big league action. He was traded to the Red Sox as part of the Caleb Durbin/Kyle Harrison deal, and was recently added to their big league roster.
24. Chicago Cubs: LHP Aaron Ashby
24 of 31
Original Pick:ย 2B Nico Hoerner
Ashby's Original Draft Position:ย No. 125 overall
After debuting in 2021, Aaron Ashby pitched well enough during the 2022 season to reel in a five-year, $20.5 million extension from the Brewers, finishing that year with a 4.44 ERA and 126 strikeouts in 107.1 innings.
Shoulder surgery in 2023 and control issues once he returned in 2024 derailed his development, but he has reinvented himself as an overpowering arm out of the bullpen. In 70 appearances over the last two years, he has a 2.16 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 128 strikeouts in 104 innings.
With Nico Hoerner off the board, the Cubs add a pitcher who could potentially fill a variety of roles on their staff. Don't be surprised in the coming years if Ashby joins the growing list of starter-turned-reliever-turned-starter-again success stories.
25. Arizona Diamondbacks: OF Lars Nootbaar
25 of 31
Original Pick:ย SS Matt McLain
Nootbaar's Original Draft Position:ย No. 243 overall
An under-the-radar contributor for the Cardinals since debuting in 2021, Lars Nootbaar has a 109 OPS+ and a strong .341 on-base percentage during his time in the big leagues.
He has yet to make his 2026 debut while recovering from a heel injury, but he is nearing his return to the St. Louis lineup. The D-backs outfield has been up in the air all season aside from Corbin Carroll, and his ability to play all three spots in the grass further adds to his appeal.
The D-backs failed to sign Matt McLain, who honored his commitment to UCLA and went No. 17 overall three years later. They received the No. 26 pick in the 2019 draft as compensation and selected left-hander Blake Walston.
26. Boston Red Sox: 3B Alec Bohm
26 of 31
Original Pick:ย 1B Triston Casas
Bohm's Original Draft Position:ย No. 3 overall
Alec Bohm and the Red Sox original pick in this spot Triston Casas fall into a similar bucket as high-profile prospects who were expected to fill middle-of-the-order run production roles before ultimately falling short of expectations.
That said, Bohm has put together a much more productive career, and he has the added value of experience at both corner infield spots. He started the All-Star Game in 2024, and has a 101 OPS+ while averaging 16 home runs and 88 RBI per 162 games.
With him in the mix, maybe the Red Sox spend the money they gave to Alex Bregman differently, and maybe they still have Kyle Harrison rather than trading him for an underperforming Caleb Durbin to try to plug a hole at the hot corner.
27. Washington Nationals: LHP Daniel Lynch IV
27 of 31
Original Pick:ย RHP Mason Denaburg
Lynch's Original Draft Position:ย No. 34 overall
After struggling to find a consistent big league role during his first four years in the majors, Daniel Lynch IV made a full-time move to the bullpen last season and logged a 3.06 ERA in 57 appearances.
A massive uptick in his strikeout rate (15.6 to 28.1 percent) has taken his game to another level this season, and he has been one of baseball's best lefty relievers. The 29-year-old has a 1.93 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 10.4 K/9 with seven holds in 23 games, and he would likely be closing games for the Nationals this year.
Mason Denaburg topped out at the High-A level in the Nationals system, and he retired following the 2024 season.
28. Houston Astros: LHP Ryan Weathers
28 of 31
Original Pick:ย 1B Seth Beer
Weathers' Original Draft Position:ย No. 7 overall
Ryan Weathers has never pitched 100 innings in a season, but his 3.74 ERA and 117 strikeouts in 125 combined innings during the 2024 and 2025 seasons were enough for the Yankees to swing a deal to acquire him this past offseason.
The 26-year-old has a 3.52 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 75 strikeouts in 64 innings through his first 11 starts in pinstripes, and throwing his four-seam fastball less and sinker more has helped elevate his entire repertoire.
The Astros traded Seth Beer as part of the package to acquire Zack Greinke at the 2019 trade deadline, and he had a 67 OPS+ and minus-0.8 WAR in 43 games in the majors. He is currently playing in the Mexican League.
29. Cleveland Guardians: OF Lawrence Butler
29 of 31
Original Pick:ย C Bo Naylor
Butler's Original Draft Position:ย No. 173 overall
Lawrence Butler was a star on the rise during the 2024 season when he posted a 131 OPS+ with 22 home runs, 18 steals and 3.0 WAR in 125 games, and the Athletics recognized that potential with a seven-year, $65.5 million extension.
His production dipped last season when he logged a 90 OPS+ in 152 games, and he is hitting just .164/.261/.247 so far this year while starting to lose playing time to Henry Bolte in center field.
Still, that realized potential in 2024 and the fact that he is still only 25 years old makes him an intriguing target for a Guardians team with perennial holes to fill in the outfield. Meanwhile, Bo Naylor is essentially the Guardians version of the same player, just at the catcher position. His stock is down after he was demoted to the minors following the Patrick Bailey trade.
30. Los Angeles Dodgers: LHP Tyler Holton
30 of 31
Original Pick:ย RHP J.T. Ginn
Holton's Original Draft Position:ย No. 279 overall
Left-hander Tyler Holton has been a key cog in A.J. Hinch's bullpen since the start of the 2023 season, and he has been deployed in a variety of roles from opener to high-leverage work in the late innings.
In 221 appearances since the Tigers claimed him off waivers from the D-backs, he has a 2.77 ERA and 0.94 WHIP with nine saves and 49 holds, and he even received a down-ballot MVP vote in 2024.
The Dodgers failed to sign J.T. Ginn, so any contribution would be an upgrade, and in this redraft Holton is the perfect replacement for Alex Vesia who went off the board earlier.
