Copa America Bracket 2016: Title Odds, Predictions Before Monday Group Fixtures

Tom SunderlandJun 13, 2016

Following the upset of Peru's controversial 1-0 victory over Brazil on Sunday evening, Venezuela are hoping to replicate that form by beating Mexico to top spot in Group C of the 2016 Copa America on Monday night.

The two teams enter their defining Group C match having both won their previous two pool outings, but El Tri hold a slight advantage over the spotless Venezuelans thanks to goal difference.

Each team has been structurally sound at the back during the Copa America Centenario, but the same couldn't be said of Brazil, who fell out of the tournament at the first hurdle in the United States.

Uruguay and Jamaica are the other Group C teams in action on Monday, but neither team is attracting quite as much attention this time around after failing to muster even a point between them so far.

Group D contenders Argentina and Chile will have undoubtedly enjoyed the Selecao's most recent result, and we break down the latest title odds heading into Monday's fixture slate, complete with predictions for the matches to come.

Mexico Firm, Not Flashy, to Top Group C

Mexico need only to draw against Venezuela on Monday to top Group C and claim a priority place in the next phase of the tournament, avoiding likely Group D winners Argentina in the process.

It's an extremely advantageous position for head coach Juan Carlos Osorio to be in at his first Copa America with El Tri, and ESPN FC Mexico recently highlighted the defensive improvements he's made at Mexico's helm:

Venezuela are no shrinking violets in defence themselves, though, having yet to concede at the tournament, and manager Rafael Dudamel knows the pressure is on his opponents, per ESPN FC's Tom Marshall:

The defensive shape formed by Osorio's predecessor, Miguel Herrera, has been improved even further in recent months, and El Tri are capable of holding their shape when needed to see out results.

The tournament front-runners won't rest on their laurels so much that they're no longer a threat, but considering Venezuela have just two goals in two games thus far, Mexico should claim a shutout victory.

Prediction: Mexico 1-0 Venezuela

Uruguay Sign Off with a Flourish

It's been a torrid Copa Centenario for Uruguay, who have scored just a single goal and suffered back-to-back defeats in the United States after initially entering the fray with with so much hope.

Following Brazil's Group B collapse, broadcaster Juan Arango confirmed that this year's tournament has seen something unprecedented in Copa America competition:

Meanwhile, Group C basement outfit Jamaica have been similarly unimpressive after losing two from two, although defender Wes Morgan told the Jamaica Observer the team did themselves proud, per Caribbean football expert Nathan Carr:

The absence of injured Luis Suarez has perhaps hit Uruguay far harder than they initially anticipated, and Edinson Cavani simply hasn't been able to fill the void as manager Oscar Tabarez would have hoped.

Suarez may get his wish and return for a swan song against the woefully unimaginative Jamaicans in the final group game, and Uruguay can at least impress in their send-off faced with lower opposition.

Prediction: Uruguay 3-0 Jamaica
