The U.S. were outclassed by Colombia in the opening game as goals from Cristian Zapata and James Rodriguez sealed the win for their opponents.

Manager Klinsmann believed there was little to separate the two sides, however, per ESPN FC's Jeff Carlisle: "We were absolutely OK with the team performance. Obviously we got punished for two set pieces in the first half and then against such a quality team, it's very difficult. There was no difference [between the two sides] besides the two goals."
Though there are perhaps few who would agree with the German's assessment of his team—they very rarely threatened their illustrious opponents and failed to muster a single shot on target in the first half—but despite conceding two goals, they did impress at the back.
ESPN's Doug McIntyre believed as much, while football writer Will Parchman picked out John Brooks in particular:
Meanwhile, neither Costa Rica nor Paraguay were able to find a way through in a tempestuous encounter the following day.
Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl noted the significance of the two results from an American perspective:
Indeed, after the draw, if the Stars and Stripes can overcome La Sele and Paraguay, they'll still reach the knockout phase.
Neither side will be easy to beat, but if the Americans can create more opportunities they can go through.
They'll need to against Costa Rica, who put in a solid defensive display in their first match. Per MLS writer Matthew Doyle, such organisation was to be expected:
"Same Costa Rica that made the final 8 of the World Cup. They've been a very good defensive team for years.https://t.co/l1dSM2Kbim

However, with Kendall Waston suspended after being sent off in added time, Costa Rica boss Oscar Ramirez will need to reshuffle his back line, and in doing so, there could be an opportunity for the USA to cause them problems.
With the U.S. in need of some inspiration in the final third, it wouldn't be a surprise if Christian Pulisic were to start. The youngster was only used as a substitute in the first game, but the precocious 17-year-old's pace, technique and willingness to run at players will come in handy in the pursuit of goals.
The match could make or break their Copa America campaign, and it's vital they approach it in a more positive manner than they did against Colombia.
