Shane Long appeared to have won the match on Friday through his 30th-minute strike from inside the six-yard box, but Luuk de Jong headed in five minutes from time with the Netherlands' first attempt on goal to snatch a share of the spoils.

FA Ireland posted a video of Long's 16th international goal on their official account:

Following the final whistle in Dublin, the Southampton striker revealed his satisfaction with the team's showing against Danny Blind's side despite letting their lead slip late on.

"

Yeah, I think we played well, we frustrated them. They didn't really threaten the goal that much and the lads defended brilliantly. They had space down the wings, but you don't mind them having the ball out there.

We caused them a bit of trouble on the breaks and it's a tough game. [The Netherlands] are a great side so it's not a bad result but disappointing to go so far in the game and not come out with a win.

The whole country's buzzing and you can feel it here tonight as well. France won't know what's hit it when all the Irish come over. I've got a lot of family coming over [to France for Euro 2016] and all they can talk about is the Euros and everyone's excited. I hope we can do them proud.

"

The former Cork City striker will make a return to his former stadium when Ireland take on Belarus on Tuesday, and the 29-year-old is excited at the prospect. "It should be good. That's where it all started for me," he told FAI.ie.

"I've got a lot of good memories there so it will be nice to go back down there and see a few familiar faces and hopefully get on the pitch, maybe grab another goal and go to France on a high."

O'Neill will announce his 23-man squad for Euro 2016 following the Belarus game, per BBC Sport, after giving himself thinking time before ruling out any available options.

Captain John O'Shea failed to answer whether the regime was better or worse under his new boss, but he felt the decision to delay the naming of the squad until just before Tuesday's deadline gave younger members of the group more chance to impress.

Per David Hytner of the Guardian, the Sunderland defender said:

"

It’s just different. When there are two games coming up, the manager wants to give lads a chance, as well. It’s always been the case when the manager has had the chance to see younger players or lads who are coming back from injury or whatever, that that opportunity has been taken. It’s a case of giving everyone a fair chance.

"

Ahead of their challenging Group E draw with Italy, Belgium and Sweden, O'Neill's team must first face off against Belarus. The eastern Europeans were beaten 3-0 by Northern Ireland in Belfast on Friday.

Goals from Kyle Lafferty, Conor Washington and Will Grigg made the difference at Windsor Park, as Michael O'Neill's men extended their unbeaten run to 11 matches, as Belarus failed to score for the fourth match in succession, per Soccerway

The Republic's game against against Belarus will represent the nations' first-ever meeting, with Alyaksandr Khatskevich's side currently ranked 77th in the world, per FIFA.com.
