Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid: Date, Location, Pick for 2016 Champions League

Rob BlanchetteMay 25, 2016

The superpowers of the Spanish capital clash on Saturday as the Galacticos of Real Madrid face local rivals Atletico Madrid in the 2016 UEFA Champions League final in Milan at the legendary San Siro Stadium.

Los Blancos collected their La Decima European Cup trophy against the Rojiblancos in the 2013-14 edition of the final and now desire an 11th pot of silver in a special El Derbi madrileno.

Both teams will be confident of success after showing good levels of consistency in La Liga in the second half of the campaign, but Real will have the psychological edge as the traditional powerhouse of the tournament.

Atleti to Turn the Tables on Their Bitter Foe

MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 21: Head coach Diego Pablo Simeone attends a press conference during the Club Atletico de Madrid Open Media Day ahead of the UEFA Champions League Final match against Real Madrid CF on May 21, 2016 in Majadahonda, Spain.

For as long as memory has stretched, one royal team has dominated football and politics in the Spanish capital.

Atleti have lived in the shadow of their neighbours for many seasons, and even when they have achieved a trophy-winning status of their own, the Galacticos tend to have the final laugh.

The 2014 Champions League final was a painful experience for Diego Simeone's men—who had recently been crowned La Liga champions, only to lose to Real for their Decima win—but fate has brought the pair from the capital together again, giving the Rojiblancos a chance for revenge.

Simeone's men have battled their way to the final, disposing the might of Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the knockouts, but the biggest test is yet to come.

The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, commonly known as San Siro, is the chosen arena for the match, which has seen much blood spilt in the years of contests and local battles.

However, midfielder Saul has said revenge will not be on his mind on Saturday as Atleti try to lift their first Champions League trophy aloft.

The player told Radio Marca (h/t Daniel Sandford for MailOnline): "If Real Madrid are a superior team, they will need to prove it on the field. The final in Milan is not a rematch of Lisbon or a chance for revenge, but rather, it is a chance to make history. We know that Madrid are a tough team. It will be very difficult, but I only think about winning."

Real skipper Sergio Ramos has also spoken out about his team's opponents in Milan, as quoted by the Champions League's official Twitter account:

The odds are once again stacked against the second club from Madrid, and even the chief of La Liga, Javier Tebas, has stated he hopes the status quo is maintained with a win for Real, per Marca's official Twitter feed:

The law of averages would dictate Atletico will one day get the slice of luck they deserve, but their form is key before the final.

Only four defeats in all competitions in their last 22 games of the campaign, per WhoScored.com, prove Atleti are ready to invade the promised land and stop Real from being top dogs once more.

Simeone has installed a siege mentality to his unit, and the wins against Barca and Bayern showed they can beat stellar opposition.

Atletico surrendered the second spot in La Liga to Los Blancos at the conclusion of the season, but the form of the Calderon club hardly dipped over 12 months of football.

Real are usually their own worst enemy in defence but are always motivated against their local derby rivals. However, on this occasion, it will be Simeone celebrating at the final whistle, as Atletico break Real hearts at the final hurdle.

Prediction: Real Madrid 0-1 Atletico Madrid.
