Both of the top men in play on Sunday, No. 17 Nick Kyrgios and No. 19 Benoit Paire, survived tough bouts to advance to the second round.
Kyrgios' match was marked by some controversy, as the fiery Australian got into a dispute with chair umpire Carlos Ramos, who took exception to Kyrgios loudly demanding a towel from one of the ballboys. Kyrgios argued with Ramos after being issued a code violation, though he settled down to defeat Marco Cecchinato.
Kyrgios addressed the situation after the match, per CNN.com:
"For me that time I didn't get mad at all. I just said it a little bit loud. The crowd was going on. I just felt like it was a bit rough. It's not an easy job out there, especially five-set matches, to concentrate, I think they do a good job. I think with someone like me that's pretty emotional it can frustrate me a little bit, but I felt like I dealt with it pretty well.
"
The Australian needed two 8-6 tiebreaker wins in his first two sets before earning a 6-4 win in the third set to get past Cecchinato. He smashed 16 aces and wasn't broken once.
He also provided some top highlights, including this shot, per Roland Garros:

He ripped a few winners like this one as well:
Paire, meanwhile, needed all five sets to get past Radu Albot, smashing nine aces and winning 23 of his 34 net points. He also ripped 65 winners to just 16 for Albot.
Paire had an up-and-down performance; however, as Juan Jose Vallejo of Rolling Stone hinted:
Nonetheless, Paire survived on a day when he clearly wasn't at his best.
American Donald Young wasn't so lucky, losing in straight sets to Teymuraz Gabashvili. Young forced a first-set tiebreaker before Gabashvili took control of the match in the next two sets. Young's 35 unforced errors and Gabashvili's eight aces and 46 winners were the difference.
Andrey Kuznetsov and Igor Sijsling each won in straight sets on Sunday as well.
No. 5 Kei Nishikori and No. 23 Jack Sock are set to finish their postponed matches on Monday, while No. 2 Andy Murray, No. 3 Stan Wawrinka, No. 8 Milos Raonic, No. 9 Richard Gasquet, No. 10 Marin Cilic, No. 15 John Isner and No. 16 Gilles Simon, among others, are all scheduled to open their French Open on Monday.
Women's Results
| No. 10 Petra Kvitova | 6 | 4 | 7 |
| Danka Kovinic | 2 | 6 | 5 |
| Vitalia Diatchenko | 0 | 2 | |
| No. 11 Lucie Safarova | 6 | 6 | |
| Sara Sorribes Tormo | 2 | 0 | |
| No. 24 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova | 6 | 6 | |
| Alison Riske | 2 | 6 | 2 |
| Viktorija Golubic | 6 | 1 | 6 |
| Su-Wei Hsieh | 7 | 6 | |
| Lara Arruabarrena | 6 | 3 |
No. 10 Petra Kvitova was the top draw for the women on Sunday, though she needed to battle a tough Danka Kovinic just to advance in three sets.
Kvitova's vaunted power (she ripped 35 winners) was matched by her predictable inconsistency (29 unforced errors). Nonetheless, she managed to survive.
"It was a big fight again. I'm happy that I won it," Kvitova told ESPN.com. "I played a lot of three-set matches, but it's not my plan when I'm stepping on the court. I think that from the experience which I have already, I still can believe that I still can win it. Even if she's serving for the match."
She was quite relieved to have escaped the scare, as she revealed on her Twitter account after the match:
The other ranked player on the day, No. 11 Lucie Safarova, had less difficulty getting past Vitalia Diatchenko, blitzing past her in two uneventful sets. She was broken just once, benefiting from Diatchenko's 27 unforced errors.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Viktorija Golubic and Su-Wei Hsieh also advanced in the women's draw.
No. 13 Svetlana Kuznetsova will finish her postponed match on Monday, while No. 2 Agnieszka Radwanska, No. 4 Garbine Muguruza, No.6 Simona Halep, No. 7 Roberta Vinci, No. 12 Carla Suarez Navarro, No. 14 Ana Ivanovic and No. 18 Elina Svitolina will all open their tournaments on Monday.
