Manchester United vs. Bournemouth: Winners and Losers from Premier League

Rob LancasterMay 17, 2016

After one false start, Manchester United finally rounded out their Premier League campaign on Tuesday with a 3-1 win over Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

The game had originally been scheduled for Sunday, only to be abandoned due to a bomb scare at the ground.

The Red Devils returned to their home for the rearranged fixture knowing their hopes of qualifying for next season's UEFA Champions League were all but dashed by Manchester City's 1-1 draw with Swansea.

They fell well short of the 19 goals required against Bournemouth to leapfrog over City and take fourth place.

However, Louis van Gaal's side did at least warm up for Saturday's FA Cup final against Crystal Palace with a comfortable win that sees them finish in fifth.

Wayne Rooney livened up a dull first half with an opening goal in the 43rd minute. He also played a hand in United's second, scored by Marcus Rashford in the second half.

Substitute Ashley Young added the home side's third, although a clean sheet went begging when Chris Smalling put through his own net in injury time.

Here, Bleacher Report picks out the winners and losers from the final match of the Premier League season.

Winner: Wayne Rooney

Quite where, if at all, Wayne Rooney ends up playing for England at Euro 2016 is a mystery only national team manager Roy Hodgson can solve.

Against Bournemouth, England's all-time leading scorer gave a demonstration of how his talents can be deployed in the centre of midfield.

Per Sky Sports Statto on Twitter, Rooney completed 88 per cent of his attempted passes against Bournemouth, as well as creating three chances.

He also scored a goal, breaking the deadlock by steering home Anthony Martial's cross from the left.

The strike saw the player reach a personal milestone, as it took him to a century of Premier League goals at Old Trafford. According to OptaJoe, only Thierry Henry (114 at Highbury) has scored more at one ground.

Loser: David De Gea

For 92 minutes, David De Gea was coasting towards a 16th clean sheet in the Premier League season.

However, the Spanish goalkeeper—who barely had a save to make throughout the match—had to pick the ball out of the net just before the final whistle.

Bournemouth substitute Max Gradel's shot was missing the target until taking a deflection off the unfortunate Chris Smalling. All De Gea could do was watch the ball slowly roll into his net.

The goal denied De Gea a share of the Golden Glove award, the honour given to the keeper who manages the most clean sheets in the English top flight.

Instead Arsenal's Petr Cech is the outright winner, so at least the Gunners finished on top of one table.

Winner: Marcus Rashford

Even with an FA Cup final to come, Marcus Rashford has already enjoyed a pretty good week.

On Monday, the teenage Manchester United forward was the one surprise name in England's 26-man provisional squad for Euro 2016.

He showed just why he was picked by national boss Rory Hodgson with a goal on Tuesday, the 18-year-old firing home from inside the area after being picked out by Antonio Valencia's downward header.

Per Squawka Football on Twitter, Rashford has now scored five Premier League goals from just eight shots.

At the start of the season, Rashford was a promising youth-team player at Old Trafford. Now, he is a first-team regular and a key part of the club's long-term plans.

Loser: Louis Van Gaal

Will fifth place and an FA Cup win be enough to keep Louis van Gaal in his job?
Will fifth place and an FA Cup win be enough to keep Louis van Gaal in his job?

A fifth-placed finish in the Premier League and an FA Cup final appearance would be enough to please fans at plenty of clubs, but not those at Manchester United.

For some who follow the Red Devils, manager Louis van Gaal is about as popular as beef lasagne on the menu at a vegetarian restaurant.

According to Rory Brigstock-Barron of MailOnline, the Dutchman was booed during his post-match speech to the small crowd that remained inside Old Trafford after the final whistle.

But, in his post-match interview, Van Gaal reiterated his desire to remain in charge for next season.

Per Jonathan Jurejko of BBC Sport, the Manchester United boss said: "I can only say I have a contract of three years and I want to fulfil that. The transition period is not over yet. I am still the manager."

However, the failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League leaves a question mark over Van Gaal's future. A win at Wembley at the weekend may not be enough to spare him from an earlier-than-intended exit.

Winner: Anthony Martial

According to TransferMarketWeb (h/t Alex Harris of the Daily Star) Paris Saint-Germain are preparing to launch an offer to sign Anthony Martial from Manchester United.

The Red Devils, however, should reject any and every bid that comes their way for the Frenchman.

The forward underlined his value to his current employers with the assist for the opening goal.

A dour first half saw Manchester United barely threaten Bournemouth until Martial played a one-two with Juan Mata to get free down the left.

His low cross into the middle was dummied by Marcus Rashford at the front post, allowing Wayne Rooney to break the deadlock with a low shot beyond visiting goalkeeper Adam Federici.

In a rather dull season at Old Trafford, Martial has been a beacon of hope for Manchester United's supporters. There is simply no way the club can even consider selling him during the summer.
