The match involved a number of controversial incidents including two mass brawls involving many of the players and members of the coaching staff, as Spurs saw their title challenge collapse to hand Leicester City the Premier League title.
Referee Mark Clattenburg produced 12 yellow cards during the fiery game, with nine for Tottenham—who have subsequently seen midfielder Mousa Dembele receive a retrospective six-game ban for gouging Diego Costa in the eye.
Football writer Kristian Sturt was among many surprised at the disparity in the fines:
However, as the FA explained in a statement, Chelsea incurred the larger sanction due to a greater number of rule breaches in recent years:
"It follows incidents which occurred in the 45th and 87th minutes and also at the end of their fixture at Stamford Bridge on Monday 2 May 2016. Prior to this fixture, Chelsea had breached FA Rule E20 on four separate occasions and Tottenham Hotspur twice since November 2014.
Following the Independent Regulatory Commission hearing, both clubs were also warned as to their future conduct.
"
As ESPN FC's Liam Twomey noted, the majority of Chelsea's rule breaches occurred under previous manager Jose Mourinho:
Tom Williams of Agence France-Presse revealed the moniker that has subsequently been given to the 2-2 draw, ostensibly due to the off-field incidents during the game rather than the play on it:
Both sides will need to be wary of getting involved in similar incidents in the future, as it seems they will receive an even greater penalty due to repeat offences.
If the two are to challenge for the title next season along with Pep Guardiola's Manchester City and their other rivals, it's vital they keep their cool.
