Tom BeckMay 15, 2016

Manchester City all but secured UEFA Champions League qualification on the final day of the 2015-16 Premier League season with a 1-1 draw with Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.

Arsenal stole second spot in place of north London rivals Tottenham with a 4-0 win over Aston Villa, as Spurs were thrashed 5-1 at St. James' Park by relegated Newcastle.

Manchester United—who had a chance of securing a top-four finish heading into the weekend's action— saw their clash with AFC Bournemouth abandoned after a suspicious package was found in the northwest quadrant of Old Trafford, per the Telegraph's Luke Brown.

Recap

Manchester City edged cross-city rivals United into the final Champions League qualification place with an unconvincing 1-1 draw with south Wales opponents Swansea. With an 18-goal advantage over Louis van Gaal's men, City have all but confirmed their place in Europe's elite club competition.

Kelechi Iheanacho netted from close range after just five minutes, tucking in from close range following Kevin de Bruyne's cutback. However, Andre Ayew netted with a deflected free-kick in first-half stoppage time to level the match.

The official Premier League account confirmed it would take an almighty effort for United to overturn City in fourth place:

Following Leicester's crowning as title winners with two games still to play, Tottenham's ambitions of a strong finish to the season were limited to second in the table.

However, it was not to be, as OptaJoe detailed the stat no Spurs fan wanted to see:

Mauricio Pochettino's side were out of sorts for the second week running and were second best for much of the first period in the northeast. Georginio Wijnaldum put Newcastle ahead on the 20-minute mark with his 10th goal of the season before the Toon doubled their advantage before half-time through Aleksandar Mitrovic's header.

The Chronicle's Chris Waugh noted how well the Newcastle fans had taken to their Spanish coach:

Erik Lamela pulled one back for the visitors before Mitrovic was shown a straight red card for a horrible stamp on Kyle Walker. Despite playing on one man short, Rafael Benitez's side regained their two-goal advantage from the penalty spot through Wijnaldum as Tottenham's hopes of toppling bitter rivals Arsenal were humbled. Rolando Aarons netted an embarrassing fourth with five minutes to play before Daryl Janmaat stunned Spurs with a fifth strike in a humiliating 5-1 defeat.

Sky Sports Statto revealed just how damning that final day result is to Pochettino's managerial record:

The Gunners leapfrogged their nearest challengers into second place after Olivier Giroud scored a wonderful hat-trick in a 4-0 win at the Emirates over basement club Villa. The France international took just five minutes to find the back of the net with a bullet header. Arsene Wenger's side continued to test the lowly strugglers and eventually bagged their second of the game, as Giroud tapped in from close range following a fine move between Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.

Just two minutes later, and with a runner-up spot now effectively confirmed, Giroud netted his third of the game, sliding a low finish into the bottom corner after smart link-up with Hector Bellerin. Marc Bunn then conceded an own goal after heavy pressure from Mikel Arteta to end their season in apt fashion.

WhoScored.com detailed Giroud's superb run of form against the Villains:

Manchester United stood no chance of challenging for a place among the top four sides in the division after their match with Bournemouth never took place. The Old Trafford contest was abandoned before a ball was kicked following safety concerns regarding a package found inside the ground. The iconic stadium was evacuated before Van Gaal's side could enter the field, with the match postponed for an undetermined period of time.

Greater Manchester Police released the following statement:

Southampton continued their fine late-season form with a 4-1 thrashing of Crystal Palace to secure fifth spot with goals from Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle, Ryan Bertrand and Steven Davis. The Saints have enjoyed a terrific run of results to achieve Europa League football, having lost just one of their final 10 domestic games, per Soccerway.

Meanwhile, for West Ham, their hopes of securing European football through a league finish were dashed after losing 2-1 to Stoke City. Despite going ahead through Michail Antonio, the Hammers were ultimately beaten after goals from Giannelli Imbula and Mame Biram Diouf. The east London outfit could still seal a European berth should Manchester United win the FA Cup final over Crystal Palace at the end of May.

For champions Leicester, it was a welcome return to Stamford Bridge for former Blues manager Ranieri, as he arrived as a newly crowned league winner. Cesc Fabregas looked to take the glimmer off the Foxes' title success with a 66th-minute penalty, but Danny Drinkwater replied with an equaliser with eight minutes remaining.

Leicester fan and BBC Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker hailed his former side's record in a historic campaign:

Elsewhere, Everton thrashed Norwich 3-0 in their first match following the sacking of head coach Roberto Martinez, Watford and Sunderland drew 2-2, with both teams having already secured survival for another year, and West Brom drew 1-1 at home with Liverpool.
