Derby County vs. Hull: Score, Reaction from 2016 Championship Play-Off, Leg 1

James DudkoMay 14, 2016

Hull City took a giant step toward Wembley Stadium and the Premier League by beating Derby County 3-0 in their Sky Bet Championship play-off semi-final first leg at the iPro Stadium on Saturday.

A strike from Abel Hernandez and an own goal from Derby defender Jason Shackell gave Hull a two-goal, first-half lead, while Andrew Robertson struck deep into injury time to give the Tiger's a comfortable advantage ahead of next week's second leg.

The win was testament to Hull boss Steve Bruce's counter-attacking strategy. His players sat deep, let Derby play in midfield and routinely pinched possession before breaking with pace out wide.

DERBY, UNITED KINGDOM - MAY 14: Steve Bruce manager of Hull City shouts as Darren Wassall manager of Derby County looks on during the Sky Bet Championship Play Off semi final first leg match between Derby County and Hull City at the iPro Stadium on May 1

It was a smart approach from an experienced manager bidding for an instant return to the Premier League.

Bruce had to make a late change to his starting lineup when goalkeeper Allan McGregor was ruled out injured, per Philip Buckingham of the Hull Daily Mail.

Eldin Jakupovic replaced McGregor in an XI also featuring Mohamed Diame supporting Hernandez in attack. Meanwhile, the Rams relied on a front three of Chris Martin, Johnny Russell and Tom Ince, per Sky Sports Football League:

Russell's direct running threatened to stretch the Hull defence early on, while Bradley Johnson's movement from midfield and aerial prowess also caused a few problems.

At the other end, an early snap shot from Hernandez offered a sign of Hull's intent. But it was Derby winning most of the 50-50 challenges during the early exchanges, even if the final pass consistently let the home side down.

Hull were dangerous on the break, and it took a brave last-ditch block from Craig Bryson to deny a shot from Robert Snodgrass. Then Tom Huddlestone thrashed wide.

But it was Derby playing the more ambitious and eye-pleasing football. A fantastic pass-and-go move involving playmaker Will Hughes was wasted by Johnson's heavy touch in the box. Meanwhile, winger Ince's perceptive movement was confusing Hull's defence.

Martin soon fired over after another smart exchange of passes, this time involving Marcus Olsson, Johnson and Hughes. Hull needed to get tighter and stop Hughes dictating possession.

Yet for all the fancy football Derby produced, Hull had the better chances. Specifically, Hernandez headed wide after a devilishly whipped free-kick from Snodgrass. But the big striker soon made amends.

A rushed clearance from Jakupovic wasn't dealt with and eventually found its way to Hernandez, who dragged a fierce low shot past a despairing Scott Carson. The veteran goalkeeper should have done better.

It was a cruel blow after the hosts had made all the running early on.

Scoring first was also a positive omen for Hull, but an ominous one for Derby, per Sky Sports Statto:

Things could have gotten worse when Diame strode into the box but dragged his shot inches wide of the post. The chance was missed, but it was the perfect illustration of Hull's quick-breaking strategy.

The plan soon helped yield a second goal when Moses Odubajo's cross hit Shackell and flew beyond a wrong-footed Carson.

Boos rang out at the break as Derby's promotion hopes already looked doomed.

A Snodgrass free-kick flicked away from goal by Shackell was the one notable chance during the first 15 minutes of the second half. The static fare and pedestrian pace was a sign of how Hull had maintained control. They were squeezing the space Hughes enjoyed before the break and forcing the hosts to play through packed numbers.

Hull's defence was also ably supplemented by fine work from midfielders Huddlestone and Jake Livermore, who routinely got back to make timely interceptions in the box.

Derby never got behind Hull's stubborn defensive wall, and their shots from distance lacked accuracy. The Rams' lack of threat was summed up by this damning note from Buckingham:

Wanting to freshen things up at the other end, Bruce swapped out target man Hernandez for jet-heeled Arsenal loanee Chuba Akpom. His smart reverse pass found Ahmed Elmohamady in the box late on, but the Egyptian winger shot against the side netting.

There was still time for one more break from Hull. It came from a Derby corner and ended with full-back Robertson placing a precise low shot into the bottom corner to round off a perfect day for the Tigers.

Snatching a late goal and keeping the clean sheet was a just reward for a thoroughly professional second-half performance from the Tigers.

Post-Match Reaction

Bruce summed up how comfortable his team was defensively, per Buckingham:

Bruce may have been in the mood to joke, but Derby manager Darren Wassall was left shocked and hurt by his squad's collapse:

A three-goal lead puts Hull in a strong position to reach Wembley and face either Brighton & Hove Albion or Sheffield Wednesday. The latter have a two-goal lead after the first leg, per Sky Sports' Lewis Jones
