"We know that supporters want to know what the future holds and will want to hear more from us as soon as possible. The process of scrutinising what went wrong and planning for what is to come has already begun. Right now, of course, Rafa [Benitez] and the team must prepare for the final game of the season, but after that, please rest assured we will communicate more fully with supporters.

Recap

It took 38 minutes for the Stadium of Light to begin partying in earnest, but it was nothing but a celebration after Patrick Van Aanholt fooled Joel Robles on a first-half free-kick that gave Sunderland a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, a bit of sloppy play in the box from Everton led to Lamine Kone's absolutely smashing volley and a 2-0 lead.
Kone would earn a brace in the second half, and Everton never really seemed to pose a major threat, as Sunderland remained in the Premier League for another season. But boy, did they do it by the skin of their teeth, as Jonathan Wilson of the Blizzard noted:
Paul Carr of ESPN added:
So, what exactly changed for a Sunderland side that struggled so mightily early in the season?
The answer to that is fairly simple, as Paul Hayward of the Telegraph noted:
The fascinating thing now will be seeing how manager Sam Allardyce will continue improving this club going forward. There will be hope at the Stadium of Light that he will usher in a new era of success with the Black Cats. After Leicester City's shocking title this season, hope springs eternal for every club in the Premier League.
There is little hope at Newcastle, who have the double indignation of being relegated and being relegated by rival Sunderland. In a statement to the club's supporters, Newcastle United managing director Lee Charnley made it clear that a period of scrutiny is coming, per
Club legend Alan Shearer, meanwhile, saw the writing on the wall:
Everton manager Roberto Martinez might see some writing on the wall, too. The Toffees have absolutely limped down the stretch under the beleaguered manager, having won just one Premier League game in their last nine fixtures, tumbling down the table in the process.
Martinez has denied the inevitability of his sacking following the season. That stance is either naive or defiant, as Everton appear to be a football club that has simply given up on the season. That's never a good sign for a manager.
Norwich City, meanwhile, did their part to avoid relegation on Wednesday, beating Watford 4-2. Too little, too late, however.
Finally, in what normally would be a premier matchup at this point in the season, Chelsea and Liverpool played to a 1-1 draw after a poor bit of goalkeeping from Asmir Begovic led to a Christian Benteke equaliser in second-half stoppage time.

Chelsea's Eden Hazard struck for the fourth time in the past four games to give the Blues a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute, and it looked like they would hold on. But Liverpool—with some more late magic, something that seems to be a trend under new manager Jurgen Klopp—managed to snatch a point in the dying moments.
Liverpool's season still hinges on the Europa League, where a title would elevate them to Champions League play next season. That might be the club's only entry to Europe at this point, as the Reds will have to finish in the top seven to have any chance of playing in the Europa League next season (if they lose the Europa League final).
And even a seventh-place finish guarantees nothing. In that scenario, Manchester United would have to win the FA Cup final and finish in the top six of the table, keeping open a third spot for Europa League qualification.
So Liverpool's final Premier League contest still matters, even if the club's focus is likely on the Europa League final.
Chelsea, meanwhile, can't qualify for Europe but certainly turned their season around and will be a threat to win a title under Antonio Conte next season. Certainly, keeping Hazard healthy and happy will be crucial for the Blues, as they look to put a shockingly disappointing 2015-16 campaign behind them.
