Rory MarsdenMay 8, 2016

Manchester City's UEFA Champions League prospects for next season are now out of their hands after they could only draw 2-2 with Arsenal in Premier League action at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Manchester United could leapfrog their bitter local rivals into fourth spot if they win their last two matches of the season following a narrow 1-0 victory over Norwich City on Saturday.

Sunderland took the initiative in the fight against relegation in Week 37 after they claimed a potentially crucial 3-2 win over Chelsea, while Newcastle United could only draw 0-0 with Aston Villa on Saturday.

Week 37 Recap

City desperately needed a victory in manager Manuel Pellegrini's last match in charge at the Etihad to go into their final game of the season knowing a win would guarantee them a top-four finish.

And they made an excellent start to the match, Sergio Aguero netting in the eighth minute with a fine finish into the bottom corner.

However, Olivier Giroud equalised for the Gunners just two minutes later, heading home from a corner after losing marker Eliaquim Mangala, per the Telegraph's James Ducker:

Kevin De Bruyne reestablished the Sky Blues' one-goal lead after a powerful run in the 51st minute only for Alexis Sanchez to draw the teams level at 2-2 following brilliant link-up play with Giroud 22 minutes from time.

City will now have to rely on one of West Ham United or Bournemouth to take points off the Red Devils in their final two games of the season after Juan Mata's goal was enough for United to beat Norwich at Carrow Road on Saturday.

Another stale United performance still ended in a win when Wayne Rooney pounced on Sebastien Bassong's mistake and fed the onrushing Mata to fire home in the 72nd minute.

Norwich's defeat was good news for drop rivals Newcastle and Sunderland, but the Magpies failed to properly take advantage as they drew with already-relegated Villa.

Sunderland, though, were well worth their win over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light. They went 1-0 down to Diego Costa's 14th-minute goal and were behind again after Wahbi Khazri's volleyed equaliser when Nemanja Matic scored in first-half stoppage-time.

But two goals in three second-half minutes from Fabio Borini and Jermain Defoe gave Sam Allardyce's side a much-deserved win that lifted them out of the bottom three, per BT Sport's Ian Darke:

Having been confirmed as champions on Monday when Spurs failed to beat Chelsea, Leicester celebrated with a win over Everton, Jamie Vardy scoring a double and Andy King netting before Claudio Ranieri's side were presented with the famous trophy, per ESPN FC:

Second-placed Tottenham lost their first home league game since January on Sunday as they were downed 2-1 by Saints, who came from behind through a Steven Davis double after Son Heung-Min had netted the opener.

Southampton's victory kept their hopes of a UEFA Europa League place alive and continued an excellent run of form in 2016 for Ronald Koeman's side, per Squawka:

Meanwhile, Sunday's other game saw Liverpool win 2-0 at Anfield against the Hornets thanks to a goal in each half from Joe Allen and Roberto Firmino.
