EPL Table: Updated 2016 Standings, Top Scorers After Saturday's Week 37 Results
Jamie Vardy came agonisingly close to tying Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane at the top of the Premier League's top scorer's standings, missing a penalty in Leicester City's 3-1 win over Everton.
The England international had already scored twice, including once from the penalty spot, but he fired his second spot-kick over the bar.
Elsewhere, Jermain Defoe scored his 15th goal of the season, firing Sunderland out of the relegation zone in the process. His strike resulted in a 3-2 win for the Black Cats against Chelsea, and with Newcastle United only managing a scoreless draw against Aston Villa, Sunderland now lead the Magpies by a point and still have a match in hand.

Recap
The Foxes couldn't have asked for a much better match to celebrate winning the title, as Leicester cruised to a 3-1 win over Everton. Vardy gave the hosts the lead at the King Power Stadium, and Andy King doubled their advantage shortly after the half-hour mark.
Vardy, who returned from suspension, would add a second goal from the penalty spot to close the gap to Kane to a single goal, but when he was given another opportunity from 11 yards out, he was less successful, via Sky Sports Football:
Kevin Mirallas added a late goal for Everton, who will have two more matches to improve on the 12th spot they hold in the standings right now.
Defoe added to his impressive scoring tally by notching one of his most important goals of the season, as Sunderland edged ahead of Chelsea thanks to his strike after 70 minutes.
As shared by Bleacher Report UK, it completed quite the turnaround:
Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic had twice given the Blues the lead, with Wahbi Khazri pulling his team level the first time and Fabio Borini following his example in the second half.
The Black Cats were desperate for a win in the battle against relegation, and Defoe stepped up when it was needed the most, firing a wonderful strike past Thibaut Courtois shortly after Borini’s equaliser.
Per Squawka Football, Defoe has been remarkably efficient in front of goal this season:
Manager Sam Allardyce thought it was a huge result for Sunderland, via the club’s official Twitter account:
With Newcastle failing to score against Aston Villa, Sunderland are now one point above the relegation zone, with Norwich sitting four points behind the Black Cats. The Canaries and Sunderland still have two matches left on the schedule, one more than Newcastle.
West Ham’s slim UEFA Champions League hopes took a big hit on Saturday, as Swansea scored four goals at Boleyn Ground—and an own goal—to beat the Hammers.

Wayne Routledge, Andre Ayew, Ki Sung-yueng and Bafetimbi Gomis all found the net for Swansea, while Stephen Kingsley handed the hosts their only goal.
The result means West Ham now trail Manchester United by four points and fourth-placed Manchester City by five, with just two matches remaining for all three teams.
Telegraph Football couldn’t help themselves:
Dwight Gayle scored a brace to guide Crystal Palace past Stoke City, and Salomon Rondon bagged his eighth goal of the season in the 1-1 draw against Bournemouth. Craig Gardner missed a penalty in that match, allowing Matt Ritchie to salvage a point for the Cherries.
