UEFA Euro 2016 Odds Preview: France, Germany Betting Favorites for Tournament
The French national team has won each of the last two major tournaments that the country has hosted, winning the European Championship back in 1984 and the World Cup in 1998. As the host nation of this year's Euro 2016 tournament, France hopes to enjoy success at home once again.
France is a three-to-one (+300) favorite on the Euro 2016 odds at sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark. In addition to having a talented team and home soil advantage, France also has the advantage of a very favorable group draw in Group A.
Switzerland (+6600 to win Euro 2016) is solid but beatable, and Romania (+25000) and Albania (+50000) both lack the talent to keep up with a team of France's caliber. The French club should have an easy path into the round of 16 where it will try to ride the momentum of its home crowd to victory.
Germany isn't far behind the host nation on the betting board (+333). The German national club won the World Cup in 2014 and embarrassed that tournament's host nation along the way, crushing Brazil 7-1 in the semifinals.
Germany's biggest threat in Group C comes from Poland (+6600), which is led by dangerous Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.
With a recent history of success and a smothering defensive style, the Spanish national team could be a major threat. Spain (+550) won each of the last two European Championships in 2008 and 2012, and also won the World Cup in between those titles in 2010. After a stunning failure to advance out of the group stage in the 2014 World Cup, Spain will have a chip on its shoulder in this tournament.
England (+800) has loads of young talent and the potential to have one of the most potent offensive attacks in this tournament. This national team has historically been its own worst enemy however, in part due to the national pressure of never having won this tournament and last winning the World Cup all the way back in 1966.
Other contenders to win Euro 2016 include Belgium (+1100), Italy (+1600), and Portugal (+2200).
According to sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo is a favorite at seven-to-one (+700) odds to finish as the tournament's top goal scorer over a talented field including Germany's Thomas Muller (+700), France's Antoine Griezmann (+800), England's Harry Kane (+1200), and Belgium's Romelu Lukaku (+1200).
