Real Madrid are the favourites to lift the 2016 UEFA Champions League trophy after they confirmed their spot in the final on Saturday, May 28 at the San Siro Stadium in Milan.

Los Blancos defeated Manchester City 1-0 on Wednesday night at the Bernabeu Stadium to advance with a solitary goal to their name and will meet neighbours Atletico Madrid in a repeat of the 2013-14 final.

Cristiano Ronaldo remains the top scorer in the competition with only the marquee game remaining, having netted 16 goals in 2015-16, per WhoScored.com.

Diego Simeone's Chance For Redemption

TOPSHOT - Atletico Madrid's Argentinian coach Diego Simeone celebrates qualifying for the final after the UEFA Champions League semi-final, second-leg football match between FC Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid in Munich, southern Germany, on May 3, 2016.

When Atletico reached the final of the Champions League two seasons ago, they were fresh off their success in La Liga, splitting Spain's superpowers to capture the Primera Division.

The European final proved a step too far for the Rojiblancos, defeated 4-1 by their cross-city rivals as Real claimed their Decima title in the elite competition.

Atleti were crestfallen by the defeat, despite becoming champions of Spain, and it looked unlikely they would climb the mountain in Europe once again.

Fast forward two seasons, and manager Diego Simeone and his team once again stand on the edge of glory, one point from the La Liga summit and in the final of the Champions League after disposing of an artistic Bayern Munich side on Tuesday night—winning 2-2 on away goals after losing the second leg 2-1 in Germany.

The last time the Vicente Calderon Stadium club made the final, they immediately lost Diego Costa and Filipe Luis to Chelsea, as Thibaut Courtois returned to his west London parent club.

Simeone has had to build again, and the addition of Antoine Griezmann has inexplicably kept Atleti challenging for the biggest trophies.

The France international has hit 28 goals in La Liga and Europe, according to WhoScored.com, and has ensured Costa's legacy has been put to bed with little fuss.

The Argentinian manager has guaranteed the foundations of his team have remained secure, and with Luis recruited back from England, the back four has looked as formidable as it did during their league triumph in 2013-14.

The Telegraph's Jeremy Wilson paid homage to Simeone's achievement as he stands on the edge of success once again:

"

Jose Mourinho, Pep Guardiola and Sir Alex Ferguson might have been the dominant managerial figures in Europe during the past decade but, narrow the focus to five years, and there is an increasingly convincing case that Simeone had been the outstanding individual.

On an annual budget that has more in common with Everton, Newcastle and Aston Villa than Manchester United, Bayern Munich or Real Madrid, he has turned Atletico Madrid into serial contenders for football’s biggest prizes. A second Champions League final in three years awaits and, having also already won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Europa League, the European Super Cup and the Spanish Super Cup, it is now the only major honour that eludes him.

Atletico will always be considered the capital's second team, no matter which titles they achieve, but fate has once again given them the unlikely chance of slaying Real on the biggest stage possible.

The European Cup is the holy grail for Los Blancos, and winning the Decima crown against their bitter local rivals made the achievement all the much more sweeter.

Now, Simeone has the chance for revenge and the opportunity to write his name in the history books as the man who took his men to Italy to ground-and-pound their richer brothers from Madrid, walking out of the Galacticos' shadow as they force an eclipse of the Milanese sun with a heroic win on May 28.
