Twitter Reacts as Manchester United Draw Postpones Leicester City's Title Party

Tom WebbMay 1, 2016

Leicester City will have to wait a little longer to secure the Premier League title after drawing 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Going into the game, Claudio Ranieri's men knew a win would put them beyond the reach of Tottenham Hotspur in second place—and anticipation was high:

Nearly there, Leicester… #LCFC https://t.co/OBc32rgWJp

It was a particularly special day for Foxes goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who returned to the ground where his father, Peter, made the family name famous:

United threatened to tear up the script when they took the lead through Anthony Martial after just eight minutes:

"

Party poopers... Martial 1-0

— John Cross (@johncrossmirror) May 1, 2016"
"

Valencia cuts inside his man on the right, floats a cross to the back post and Martial is in acres of space to slot past Schmeichel.

This is how you would have expected this game to go back in August. United in control. Leicester trying to survive. #MUFC #LCFC

But Foxes captain Wes Morgan levelled the scores within nine minutes:

"

And Leicester answer the questions again. Wes Morgan header - 1-1.

"

Drinkwater curls free-kick into the box, Huth has his shirt pulled over his head by Smalling and Morgan ghosts in behind to head home.

9 - Leicester have lost just one of their last nine league games in which they've conceded first (v Liverpool in December). Resolute.

Leicester grew into the game following the equaliser but endured a nervous moment when Danny Simpson gifted the ball to Jesse Lingard, who went down under pressure from the defender—only for the referee to wave play on:

"

Probably not a foul to be fair to Michael Oliver. Did just enough to destabilise him. Lingard loses it and just drops.

— Sam Tighe (@stighefootball) May 1, 2016"

Marcos Rojo, meanwhile, was struggling for the home side:

"

It feels like Marcos Rojo loses way more aerial duels at set pieces than he should. Constant source of angst for #MUFC

— Sam Tighe (@stighefootball) May 1, 2016"
"

Rojo is such an awful defender.

— Alex Shaw (@AlexShawESPN) May 1, 2016"
"

Marcus Rojo shows up to work, clocks in and hopes no one notices him napping the entire day. Can't even hate on that

— Zito (@_Zeets) May 1, 2016"

Half-time arrived with much of the talk focusing on Marouane Fellaini's unpunished elbow on Robert Huth:

"

Great game, this. Hopefully it is Fellaini's last for a long long time. #thug

— Michael Calvin (@CalvinBook) May 1, 2016"
"

Souness: "Fellaini won't escape a ban for that."

— Simon Stone (@sistoney67) May 1, 2016"
"

Fellaini is a thug - pure and simple.

— Richard Keys (@richardajkeys) May 1, 2016"
"

You put your elbows in, your elbows out..do the Marouane fellaini and you swing them round. That's what he's all about 😉

The second half went one way then the other, with Wayne Rooney's ambitious chip one of a handful of missed chances:

"

Rooney's latest attempt to recreate that chip against Portsmouth drifts about five feet over the bar. Open start to the second half.

— Tom Williams (@tomwfootball) May 1, 2016"
"

The Badly-Disguised Rooney Chip™

"

Wayne Rooney hitting his minimum quote of at least one attempted chip, even when it's nowhere near being appropriate.

— Paddy Power (@paddypower) May 1, 2016"

Leicester were without the suspended Jamie Vardy, who watched helplessly from the stands:

"

Biggest party of the year, and you have to just sit and watch #vardy #lcfc pic.twitter.com/C2ZFLILqcF

— Bleacher Report UK (@br_uk) May 1, 2016"

The visiting fans continued to cheer their team toward an elusive second goal:

"

#LCFC are really pushing. They really want to see @GaryLineker in his pants 😂 pic.twitter.com/loDX9ByKAf

— Bleacher Report UK (@br_uk) May 1, 2016"

They had to endure another nervous moment when Danny Drinkwater pulled down Memphis Depay. The midfielder was sent off for a second bookable offence, but the foul was adjudged to have occurred outside the area:

"

Drinkwater sent off for Leicester after getting second booking for hauling Depay back right on edge of box.

— Tom Williams (@tomwfootball) May 1, 2016"
"

Drinkwater had been playing superbly as well. Shame.

— Sam Tighe (@stighefootball) May 1, 2016"
"

Drinkwater sent off for a very similar foul to the one Rooney was excused a few minutes ago. #MUFC should have had a penalty though. #LCFC

— Duncan Castles (@DuncanCastles) May 1, 2016"
"

The difference between that and Rooney's tug on Gray is what? Nothing for me. Co-incidence Oliver will ref Rooney's testimonial?

— Richard Keys (@richardajkeys) May 1, 2016"
"

Easy to say it will still all happen for Leicester - which it surely will - but fully understand if their fans find this nerve-shredding.

— Phil McNulty (@philmcnulty) May 1, 2016"

United finished the stronger, but Leicester held on to claim a point that leaves them within two of a maiden league title:

"

FT: Manchester United 1-1 Leicester City. #LCFC will be champions if Tottenham don't win at Chelsea on Monday pic.twitter.com/GhFbYUIm1F

— Bleacher Report UK (@br_uk) May 1, 2016"
"

It's supposed to be enjoyable isn't it? Excruciating watch, but a massive point!

— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) May 1, 2016"
"

Final score: 1-1. Leicester made to wait. Over to you, Tottenham...

— Tom Williams (@tomwfootball) May 1, 2016"
"

Not yet #LCFC...https://t.co/NByswJos1H
