Champions League Results 2016: Top Scorers, Odds After Semi-Final Leg 1 Scores

James DudkoApr 27, 2016

Robert Lewandowski didn't close the gap on Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo at the top of this season's UEFA Champions League scoring charts, after failing to find the net in Bayern Munich's 1-0 semi-final first-leg defeat to Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday.

The Polish striker couldn't take advantage of Ronaldo missing Los Blancos' semi-final first leg 0-0 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

He wasn't helped by Munich manager Pep Guariola leaving striker partner Thomas Muller on the bench, per the club:

Lewandowki's rare off night is one reason why five-time winners Bayern are drifting at 11-4 to finish this season with a sixth European Cup.

Real Madrid are still favourites at 21-10 to win an 11th, despite their first-leg stalemate in Manchester.

The prolific Portuguese forward will hope to make it back for next week's second leg and extend his eight-goal lead over Lewandowski.

Lewandowski Struggles, While Muller Watches On

It was strange to see Bayern take on the best-drilled defence on the continent without Muller supporting Lewandowski. It's a lethal double act that so often decides games in Munich's favour, and Lewandowski looked lost at times without his prolific partner.

It was a problem B/R's Clark Whitney identified early on:

Trailing at the break, Guardiola finally came around, introducing Muller after the hour mark. But Bayern were still reduced to long-range efforts, with the ultra-athletic David Alaba going close twice from distance.

In truth, it was a quiet night even for Atletico's top attacker, Antoine Griezmann. The jet-heeled, smart-running Frenchman went closest on 29 minutes when he raced to meet a headed flick but scuffed his shot at the legs of Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer from a tight angle.

Some stout defending stymied Griezmann, but Atleti also ceded possession once Saul Niguez netted their goal. Instead, they were content to barely see the ball, lean on a mean defence and try to strike on the break.

Griezmann was kept under wraps.

It's a formula manager Diego Simeone has turned into an art form of sorts. It also has Atletico looking good as potential winner at 12-5.

Bayern meanwhile, will need more from their marquee attacking talents in the second leg.

Ronaldo Forced Into a Watching Brief as Madrid are Blanked

All Ronaldo could do was play spectator in Manchester as his team-mates failed to breach City's resolute defence. Real's brilliant No. 7 was lying low after a problem revealed itself in pre-match training, according to manager Zinedine Zidane, via ESPN's Dermot Corrigan:

Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, Lucas Vazquez and Jese attempted to compensate for Ronaldo's absence but to no avail. In fact, Madrid's greatest threat actually came from centre-back Pepe, via a second-half set piece.

Pepe produced the best save of the match from City goalkeeper Jose Hart, but sans Ronaldo, Madrid's attack remained blunted. The Citizens's odds have shortened to 7-1 to get by Los Merengues and win the tournament.

Ronaldo will be anxious to return at the Santiago Bernabeu and bail Madrid out once again, the way he did at the quarter-final stage against Wolfsburg. He is after all, trying to better his own record by topping the 17 goals he netted in this tournament during the 2013/14 campaign.

But Spanish publication Marca has cast some doubt on Ronaldo's availability for the second leg, suggesting more tests will be needed to determine whether the thigh strain that kept him out on Tuesday will rule him out again.

No Ronaldo will make it difficult for Madrid to advance. City have the players to grab an away goal or two in the Spanish capital, specifically, striker Sergio Aguero and attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.

First-leg ties are often cagey affairs; none of the tournament's top hotshots being able to find the net across two games vividly illustrates that fact. Lewandowski and Muller will surely offer more in Munich, while Griezmann will remain Atleti's best hope of pinching an invaluable away goal on the break.
