5 Top-Performing Quarterback Recruits from 2016 Charlotte Elite 11 Regional

Damon SaylesApr 25, 2016

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — All at Mallard Creek High School on Sunday saw the future of Stanford football compete nearly in his own stratosphere.

Davis Mills put on a show in the Elite 11 Charlotte regional that solidified his top-five national ranking among pro-style quarterbacks. The Greater Atlanta Christian School standout not only claimed camp MVP honors but also earned an invitation to compete in the Elite 11 finals, which will take place June 3-5 in Los Angeles.

Mills stood out among roughly 75 quarterbacks from 14 states and Washington, D.C., who competed on Sunday. He shined in a competitive half-skelly showdown, which featured six signal-callers battling for camp MVP honors.

Davis was impressive, but he wasn't the only quarterback to show his skills. Here is a look at five quarterbacks who stood out on Sunday. Brian Stumpf, president of sports at Student Sports, provided analysis on each athlete.

MVP: 4-Star QB Davis Mills

1 of 5

Hometown (school): Norcross, Georgia (Greater Atlanta Christian School)

Size: 6'3", 192 lbs

247Sports composite rankNo. 81 overall (No. 4 PRO)

Commitment status: Committed to Stanford

Stumpf called Davis Mills "as slam dunk of a selection as we've had so far on the spring tour." That's huge praise, but the proud Stanford commit did everything right on Sunday to earn the compliment.

As the Cardinal's top-ranked pledge of the 2017 class, Mills has aspirations of improving on what some would call a productive junior year. He threw for 2,821 yards and 25 touchdowns and also rushed for 577 yards and 14 touchdowns last season.

Mills committed to Stanford on March 15. He currently has 29 reported offers but said on Sunday he is very solid with his verbal pledge.

Stumpf's comments

"After probably the first five or 10 minutes, Davis jumped out in front and never looked back. He's super consistent and refined. He looks like a Jugs machine; the ball's on the money 90 percent of the time, and when it's not, he gets it right the next time. He was great here last year as an underclassman, and we were expecting something similar. Hopefully, he'll continue to progress."

3-Star QB Shon Mitchell

2 of 5

Hometown (school): Chesapeake, Virginia (Oscar Smith HS)

Size: 5'11", 170 lbs

247Sports composite rank: No. 801 overall (No. 18 DUAL)

Commitment status: Uncommitted

Last week, Shon Mitchell showed poise and a level of confidence to where nothing fazed him in Washington, D.C. Sunday in Charlotte was nothing different. He made great throws throughout the day and showed his size isn't a liability.

Mitchell has put up eye-catching numbers in three seasons, compiling 8,159 yards and a 40-4 record, according to Andy Hilton of Recruit757.com. Mitchell nearly tallied 3,000 passing yards his junior year.

Virginia Tech has offered Mitchell and is hoping to keep him in the state. He also has reported offers from Wake Forest, William & Mary and Charlotte.

Stumpf's comments

"We've seen him in back-to-back weeks, and he built on a good performance in D.C. I think he's one of the more consistent guys [Sunday]. We saw some guys who were probably more projects, and Shon's one of the more finished guys we've seen in the last couple of weeks. He had another good day for himself. I think somebody's going to get a really efficient guy in Shon Mitchell."

3-Star QB Matt McKay

3 of 5

Hometown (school): Raleigh, North Carolina (Wakefield HS)

Size: 6'4", 185 lbs

247Sports composite rankNo. 810 overall (No. 35 PRO)

Commitment status: Committed to North Carolina State

When Matt McKay committed to North Carolina State in February, he told Steve Wiltfong of 24Sports that he wanted to "take this program to another level." Although he is listed in composite rankings as a pro-style quarterback, it's his dual-threat capabilities that have Wolfpack fans excited for the future.

McKay was impressive in seven-on-seven scenarios and other quarterback drills on Sunday. North Carolina State won a recruiting battle over West Virginia, Pitt, Temple and Old Dominion and will get someone who is a risk-tasker who also can be called upon to manage a game.

Statistically, McKay threw for 2,403 yards and 29 touchdowns last season. McKay also showed his versatility and escapability by rushing for 1,186 yards and 17 scores.

Stumpf's comments

"There are a couple of dual-threat guys in North Carolina who are good on tape and do a lot of good things with their feet in the run game in pads. Matt probably had the best day of that group of guys and climbed the ladder. N.C. State's got a good guy who has upside. He's better in pads than he is in this setting, but he threw it really well."

Unrated QB Davis Shanley

4 of 5

Hometown (school): Cumming, Georgia (South Forsyth HS)

Size: 6'2", 183 lbs

247Sports composite rankn/a

Commitment status: Uncommitted

As the final participant in the half-skelly showdown, Davis Shanley approached the opportunity in businesslike fashion. He didn't crack a smile, he never faltered under pressure and, most importantly, he made good throws while also taking risks.

As another quarterback who made a return trip to Elite 11 regional action this spring, Shanley showed that he was someone to take seriously in the competition. He made confident decisions and crisp passes throughout the day.

Old Dominion is the only school so far that has made an offer to Shanley, who threw for 2,348 yards and 25 touchdowns and also rushed for eight touchdowns as a junior, per MaxPreps.

Stumpf's comments

"Davis is another guy who's grown through the process. He put together his best day by far. He tests well; he's not the biggest guy, but he's athletic. He was really consistent and accurate throwing the ball. He's one of those guys who gets comfortable in the setting and starts to come into his own."

Unrated QB Isaiah Robinson

5 of 5

Hometown (school): Bethesda, Maryland (The Avalon School)

Size: 6'3", 190 lbs

247Sports composite rank: n/a

Commitment status: Uncommitted

In a word, the stock for Isaiah Robinson is rising. Robinson participated in the Elite 11 Washington, D.C., regional last week and built on that performance to advance to the top-five showcase.

Considered under the radar on a national spectacle, Robinson is expected to be a player to watch for the 2016 football season. Per Josh Apple of DMVSTREAM.com, Robinson threw for 2,381 yards and 23 touchdowns as a junior. He had a reliable target in Alabama signee Trevon Diggs.

Robinson picked up his first offer on April 6 from Robert Morris. Wake Forest, North Carolina, Iowa and Kentucky have shown interest.

Stumpf's comments

"He's a guy we've seen really take to the coaching the last two weeks. Some of the guys are more ready-made and comfortable in their own skin, but Isaiah has taken to coaching, and the staff has seen his growth. It's really encouraging. He's come a really good way the last two weeks, and we're excited to see that development continue."
