Getafe and Levante both booked surprising 2-2 draws, against Valencia and Athletic Bilbao, respectively, to boost their chances of surviving the relegation battle. With three weeks left in the season, the bottom four teams are separated by just four points.

Recap

Villarreal opted to rest a couple of starters with an eye on the upcoming UEFA Europa League clash with Liverpool, and those who weren't rested put together a bland and uninspired performance against La Real.

Neither team ever got out of first gear, and while the hosts had a handful of chances to grab the win and even hit the woodwork at one point, a scoreless draw was a fair result.

Villarreal have little left to play for domestically, as they're almost guaranteed a spot in the top four and can no longer catch Real Madrid in the standings. A spot in the Europa League final is far more important at this point, and it's no wonder the side came out flat on Sunday.

Sevilla beat Real Betis in the Seville derby, thanks to goals from Kevin Gameiro and Coke. The Europa League holders still find themselves outside of the top six in the standings, but Sunday’s big win leaves them right on the tail of Celta Vigo.

As shared by La Liga’s official Twitter account, Coke’s blast was an absolute beauty and effectively ended the match as a contest:

Betis are assured a spot in next year’s top division, regardless of the result of the match between Granada and Celta Vigo on Monday, but behind the Andalusians, the battle rages on.

Sporting Gijon, Getafe and Levante currently occupy the final three spots in the standings, and the latter two both grabbed unexpected draws on Sunday.

Getafe even came close to beating Valencia, and for a long period after Stefan Scepovic’s winner, the three points appeared to be in the bag. Paco Alcacer equalised for the visitors with minutes to spare, however.

Diego Alves made two key saves in the dying seconds, and Karim Yoda pushed the rebound wide from an offside position to make things worse. While ESPN FC’s Dermot Corrigan thought the final result was fair, the hosts could have had so much more:

Levante suffered a similar fate against Bilbao, giving up a two-goal lead in just three minutes. After 87 minutes of action, the hosts appeared to be on their way to a massive win, but Markel Susaeta and Mikel San Jose scored just minutes apart to secure a draw for the Basques.

Scorer Alvaro Medran sounded disappointed after the contest, per the Associated Press (via Cadillac News): "We had it, but they took two points from us."

The late goals were a huge setback for Levante, who still trail Granada by four points, with three matches left to play. With Gijon and Getafe also in the mix, the stage is set for some late-season drama.
