EPL Table: 2016 Top Scorers, Standings After Post-Week 35 Premier League Scores

Tom BeckApr 24, 2016

Sergio Aguero edged to within one goal of Harry Kane at the top of the Premier League scoring charts after netting for the fourth game in succession on Saturday.

The Argentina international moved above Leicester City's Jamie Vardy in the rankings and now has 23 goals in the league this term, after helping his side to a 4-0 victory over Stoke City.

With the season edging ever closer to it's conclusion, Kane will have four more opportunities to add to his tally compared to Aguero's three in the battle for the golden boot.

Recap

Aguero netted the second goal of the game in City’s thrashing of Stoke. The former Atletico Madrid attacker showed great composure from 12 yards as he lifted the ball over Shay Given, after Kelechi Iheanacho had been brought down inside the area.

Fernando put the hosts on the road to all three points in the first half as youngster Iheanacho netted a brace in the second period to put the game beyond any doubt.

Per Soccerway, Aguero has now scored seven in his last five league matches.

OptaJoe detailed the striker’s run of goals during his purple patch:

While Sky Sports Statto reveals why Stoke must hate seeing the striker’s name on the away teamsheet:

Following Arsenal’s 0-0 draw away at Sunderland, City remain third in the table by an advantage of eight goals, with the two teams equal on points.

Tottenham centre-forward Harry Kane remains the division’s sharpest finisher on 24 league goals.

The 22-year-old Spurs star will have the opportunity to add to that tally when his side travel to The Hawthorns to face West Bromwich Albion on Monday. He will also be hoping to keep his team’s title tilt alive following Leicester’s 4-0 win over Swansea City.

The league leaders fared comfortably without Jamie Vardy—serving the first game of his suspension—as Riyad Mahrez added to his impressive tally before Leonardo Ulloa bagged a either side of half-time. Marc Albrighton then put the finishing touches to a complete performance with five minutes to play.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Arsenal failed to return to third place in the standings as they played out a 0-0 draw with Sam Allardyce's Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

England international Jack Wilshere was back in the Gunners squad and came on for the final six minutes of the game:

The Black Cats earned a vital point in their fight for survival to move out of the relegation zone at the expense of Norwich on goal difference.

Sunderland created the better of the openings throughout the clash, as Patrick van Aanholt struck the crossbar with a free-kick and Petr Cech was forced to keep out Wahbi Khazri and Jermain Defoe.

Eden Hazard scored his long-awaited first goal in the league in Chelsea’s 4-1 success over Bournemouth on Saturday.

The Belgian netted the game’s second goal of the game after collecting Cesc Fabregas’ pass and thumping into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

He would then go on to wrap up maximum points in second-half stoppage time, tucking away Nemanja Matic’s close-range pull-back.

Last year’s PFA Player of the Year had failed to find the back of the net in the league in 29 games following a dreadful run in front of goal, as detailed by OptaJoe:

Dan Levene highlighted just how long that stretch is in English football:

But Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur was sympathetic for his compatriot’s struggles:

Elsewhere, Papiss Cisse and Jack Colback scored important second-half goals to help Newcastle United earn a vital point in their battle to avoid the drop against Liverpool at Anfield. Finally, basement club Aston Villa fell to their 10th successive league defeat in a forgettable campaign after losing 4-2 to Southampton at Villa Park.
