Manager Diego Simeone’s troops knew they were in for a challenge against the Basques, who have been playing solid, rugged football the last few weeks and took Sevilla all the way to a penalty shootout in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals.
Their bid to win this match got even worse when star defender Diego Godin went down with an injury, putting his availability for the upcoming UEFA Champions League clash with Bayern Munich on April 27 in serious doubt, per ESPN FC’s Dermot Corrigan:
The Atletico defence held up its end of the bargain without the Uruguay international, however, and while the attack looked far from its best at the San Mames, it did just enough to grab the win against Athletic.
That means Atletico are still level with Barcelona on points, although the Catalans hold the head-to-head advantage. The oddsmakers still like Barcelona’s chances of defending the title, something adventurous punters should take advantage of.
The Blaugrana looked spectacular on Wednesday, crushing Deportivo, 8-0, thanks to four goals and three assists from Luis Suarez. La Liga’s official YouTube account put together a highlights package of his performance:
Barcelona had lost their three previous La Liga outings, so getting back on track was vital in Week 34. The schedule looks reasonably straightforward for the Blaugrana, with matches against Sporting Gijon, Real Betis, Espanyol and Granada, although the local derby against Espanyol could prove tricky.
Per Corrigan, Barcelona manager Luis Enrique praised his team after the win:
Atletico still have to play Malaga, Rayo Vallecano, Levante and Celta Vigo as well as Bundesliga giants Bayern in the Champions League.
Karim Benzema, Lucas Vazquez and Luka Modric all scored for Real in the win over Villarreal, keeping Los Blancos on course in the title race as well. Real finish the season with matches against Rayo Vallecano, Real Sociedad, Valencia and Deportivo La Coruna.
