La Liga Table 2016 Week 33: Updated Standings, Title Odds After Friday's Results

Tom SunderlandApr 15, 2016

Levante injected a new lease of life into their fight for La Liga survival on Friday and opened Week 33 with a 2-1 win over Espanyol after conceding an early opener at Estadi Ciutat de Valencia.

Hernan Perez thought he'd set Espanyol on their path to three points, but Giuseppe Rossi and Carl Medjani had other plans and netted either side of half-time to give Levante their first win in more than a month.

La Liga leaders Barcelona are hoping to escape a downward spiral in form and play host to Valencia on Sunday evening, hoping they'll be able to claim their first league victory in more than a month.

Levante Keep Survival Hopes Alive

La Liga's relegation fight is becoming almost as intriguing as the championship tussle after Levante gave their pledge for survival a much-needed jolt thanks to a 2-1 comeback win over Espanyol on Friday evening.

Seven minutes were all Los Periquitos needed to open the scoring, when a defence-splitting pass from Victor Sanchez put Perez through to net his seventh goal of the campaign, a landmark finish, per OptaJose:

But Levante fought back with a vengeance, and Rossi stole an equaliser for the hosts after he managed to get the slightest of nods on an in-swinging cross from the right to beat Espanyol goalkeeper Pau Lopez.

That finish fired manager Rubi's side back into the fixture and on course for their first win since mid-March, with Rossi a particularly prominent part of the club's success in front of goal recently:

Neither team could break in front before the interval came, and although Espanyol may have been looked upon as the more confident team for stretches of the second period, it was the hosting outfit who got their noses in front.

Medjani's 66th-minute winner was similar to team-mate Rossi's in that he only got the smallest hint of a touch on Joan Verdu's cross into the area, but it was enough to evade Pau's grasp:

Levante kicked off Week 33 in extremely positive fashion, and they now sit level with fellow relegation-zone residents Getafe and Sporting Gijon on 28 points apiece, two points away from safety.

After a run of just one loss in their previous seven games, Espanyol have now lost two on the trot in La Liga for the first time in February, and they may start looking over their shoulder in 15th, with a scrap against the drop still on the cards.
