Gianni VerschuerenApr 14, 2016

Cedric Bakambu continued his red-hot form with a brace in Villarreal's 4-2 win over Sparta Prague on Thursday, firing the Yellow Submarine to the semi-finals of the 2016 UEFA Europa League with a 6-3 win on aggregate score.

Shakhtar Donetsk comfortably survived the quarter-finals against Braga, while Liverpool completed an unlikely comeback to get past Borussia Dortmund. In the all-Spanish tie, holders Sevilla needed penalties to get past Athletic Club.

The draw for the semi-finals will take place on Friday at 11:30 a.m. BST. UEFA will provide a live stream via its official website.

Recap

Villarreal cruised to an easy win in Prague, taking a three-goal lead into half-time thanks to goals from Bakambu, Samuel Castillejo and Bruno Soriano. The Yellow Submarine have been in superb form of late, but their dominant showing on Thursday stood out as one of their top performances of the season.

Bakambu stole the show, finding the net after just five minutes. Per Squawka Football, he's been the driving force behind Villarreal's European campaign:

He added to his tally after half-time, and while Borek Dockal and Ladislav Krejci restored some pride for the hosts, Prague never threatened Villarreal's ticket to the next round. Villarreal will be the one team to avoid during Friday's draw, as no one's form has been better of late than that of the Yellow Submarine.

Liverpool beat Dortmund 4-3 in a wacky match filled with twists and turns, eliminating the tournament favourites despite facing an early two-goal deficit.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave Die Schwarzgelben the perfect start with two goals inside the first 10 minutes, wiping away the Reds' away-goal advantage with the first strike and putting themselves in the driver's seat with the second.

Per the Daily Mail's Dominic King, BVB's pace was too much for Liverpool to handle:

The early setback took the sting out of Liverpool's attack, although they pulled through and started threatening Dortmund's goal in the latter part of the first half.

Divock Origi restored hope early in the second half, using his pace to beat the Dortmund defence and pulling one back.

But just 10 minutes later, Marco Reus took advantage of another mistake by Mamadou Sakho, who played him onside and allowed him to latch on to a ball and calmly slot it past Simon Mignolet to make the score 3-1.

Philippe Coutinho again gave Anfield life, and Sakho tied things up at 3-3 with 12 minutes left on the clock. Dortmund seemed to be in control of the match during the final minutes, but a smart set piece saw Dejan Lovren power home a header to send the Reds through to the next round.

Per Bleacher Report's Jack Lusby, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp underscored his own role in the outcome:

Sevilla, who have won the last two editions of this tournament, needed penalties to get past a valiant Bilbao squad, who overturned a 2-1 defeat from the first leg.

Aritz Aduriz gave the Basques hope with a timely goal after 57 minutes, but Kevin Gameiro struck back almost immediately, forcing Athletic to score at least once more to force extra time.

Raul Garcia did exactly that after 80 minutes, and while both teams had chances to finish the tie before a penalty shootout, spot-kicks were needed to decide who would advance. Benat Etxebarria was the only man to miss from the spot, sending the hosts through to the semi-final.

Braga shot themselves in the foot in their loss against Shakhtar, as they first surrendered a penalty, which Darijo Srna converted, before Ricardo Ferreira handed the hosts a two-goal advantage with an own goal just before half-time.

Here's a look at the unfortunate moment:

Viktor Kovalenko made it 3-0 early in the second half, all but ending the contest, and things got even worse for Braga and the unfortunate Ferreira, who somehow scored a second own goal after 74 minutes.
