Champions League Results 2016: Qualified Teams After Tuesday Quarter-Final Games

James DudkoApr 12, 2016

Real Madrid and Manchester City both progressed to the semi-final stage of this season's UEFA Champions League after beating Woflsburg and Paris Saint-Germain, respectively, on home soil on Tuesday night.

Cristiano Ronaldo dominated Wolfsburg by hitting a hat-trick at the Santiago Bernabeu to help overturn a two-goal first-leg deficit against the Bundesliga club.

Manchester City survived a missed penalty from Sergio Aguero to overcome Ligue 1 giants PSG at the Etihad Stadium. Kevin De Bruyne made sure that miss didn't prove costly when he rifled in a superb curling shot in the second half to put City in the final four.

Recap

Ronaldo ran riot during the first half-hour. A deft finish and a bullet header netted his side a brace and left the away side shellshocked.

But Wolfsburg did regain their composure to pose a considerable threat themselves. ESPN's Dermot Corrigan detailed a pair of chances that helped the Bundesliga club's players get their confidence back:

Yet Madrid refused to buckle for all of Wolfsburg's pressing before the break. Instead, Los Merengues relied on calm assurance in midfield to maintain possession and use the clock to their advantage.

Former Bayern Munich schemer Toni Kroos was a key figure in this ploy, something Squawka Football highlighted:

Things were a little nervy for Madrid after the break. It didn't help that Ronaldo's fellow attackers struggled to get on track, with both Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema out of sorts.

That meant it was down to the club's unstoppable No. 7 to once again work his magic. A late free-kick gave him the perfect chance, one he duly took to send Madrid through.

Squawka Football detailed just how often the 10-time winners have progressed to the final four in recent seasons:

In the night's other game, City stood tall against a PSG side surprisingly sluggish for the first hour. Manager Laurent Blanc had switched to three at the back, a change his players didn't respond to.

It didn't help that midfield engine Blaise Matuidi missed the game. The visitors clearly missed his energy, link play and influence in what was generally laboured possession play.

But it still took until deep into the second half for De Bruyne to settle the tie and make history for City.

While De Bruyne provided the game's highlight, former Liverpool and England goalkeeper Ray Clemence gave credit to one of the men at the back:

Hart performed splendidly over both games, and the tournament's official site referenced his penalty save from Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the first leg in Paris as a key moment in settling the eventual outcome:

City defended superbly back on home soil. Hart was stubborn to deny Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani more than once, while those in front of him, notably holding midfielder Fernando, were equally stingy.

City have gone further in this competition than they ever have before. It's terrific credit to manager Manuel Pellegrini, who also reached the semi-final with Villarreal in 2006.

Now Pellegrini's old club and his current charges will await the outcome of Bayern Munich's meeting with Benfica on Wednesday and holders Barcelona's clash with Atletico Madrid the same day before Friday's draw.
