Barclays U21 Premier League 2016: Monday Scores, Latest Standings and Fixtures
Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney announced his return from a two-month injury layoff on Monday after making a 60-minute appearance for the club's under-21 side in their 1-0 win against Middlesbrough.
The scores were tied 0-0 when Rooney took his leave of the under-21s clash, but Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News suggested it was bad news for the England leader ahead of Wednesday's FA Cup quarter-final against West Ham United:

Manchester United are looking to become the first team ever to successfully defend their U21 Development League title, and we provide a breakdown of Monday's jam-packed schedule with recap of the evening's action.

Recap
Many might have expected Manchester United's under-21s to run rampant with a rejuvenated Rooney among their order, but the veteran forward showed he's still acclimating to fitness in a muted display.
In fact, it wasn't until just after Rooney took his leave of the pitch on the hour mark that defender Paddy McNair half-volleyed United into a 1-0 lead, an irony not lost on bet365:
Luckhurst hinted Rooney's exit on the hour mark may have been down to a medical concern, but the omens are positive for United and England after the forward played his first match since mid-February.
There was more concerning injury news, though, after Boro captain Jonny Burn was fortunate to escape a red card for his challenge on Joe Rothwell in the first half, as shown by United fan account Doron Salomon:

United now sit just one point off leaders Sunderland, who fell to a 3-1 defeat at Tottenham thanks to Shayon Harrison's hat-trick for the hosts, the first two of those goals scored within nine minutes during the first period.
George Honeyman pulled a goal back for the Black Cats just prior to the half-hour mark, but Sunderland ultimately paid for several defensive mistakes, such as the glaring error that led to Harrison's second, via Spurs TV:
North London rivals Arsenal also fared well as they clinched a 2-1 victory over Division 2 leaders Derby despite Ben Sheaf seeing red in first-half added time.
Stephy Mavididi netted the opener after 15 minutes before coming off for Kaylen Hinds at half-time, who then went on to bag the winner after Charles Vernam pulled back an equaliser for the hosts. Arsenal youth writer Jeorge Bird was left in awe of score-opener Mavididi in particular:
While Leicester City's high-flying first team may reign at the top of the Premier League, their under-21 counterparts continue to suffer this season and fell to a 1-0 home defeat against Norwich City on Monday.
Ray Grant grabbed an 84th-minute winner for the Canaries to move them off the table and one point ahead of the Foxes, who have now lost four games in succession and look like favourites for the drop.

Everton and Manchester City injected some life into their campaigns following wins over fellow top-four contenders Chelsea and Reading on Monday.
The Toffees triumphed against the Blues 2-0 thanks to a set of second-half goals from Kieran Dowell and Mason Holgate—his third goal for the reserves—while the Citizens were even more convincing as they beat Reading 3-0 away from home.
Brighton and Hove Albion were the highest scorers of the night down in Division 2, however, and moved off the base of the table thanks to a 4-1 win over Newcastle United.
South-coasters Southampton thumped the Magpies' first team 3-1 on Saturday, and goals from Jack Harper, James Tilley, Dan Ward and Jonah Ayunga ensured another southern outfit ran riot on Monday. While the senior side struggle in the Premier League, the fans' reaction to the under-21s' result was also far from positive:
Elsewhere, 10-man Aston Villa scored late to seal a 3-2 win over West Ham United, who twice came back from a goal down to draw level in their trip to Birmingham.
They weren't the only outfit to save a late win, though, after defender Scott Wharton struck in the 93rd minute to book a 2-1 in for Blackburn Rovers against West Bromwich Albion, lifting them to fifth in Division 2.
