Bundesliga Table 2016: Standings and Top Scorers After Week 29 Results

Tom BeckApr 10, 2016

Bayern Munich continued their romp to a fourth successive Bundesliga title with a 3-1 victory over Stuttgart at Mercedes-Benz-Arena on Saturday to extend their lead at the top to seven points. Closest challengers Borussia Dortmund lost pace in their fight to close the gap at the summit after drawing with rivals Schalke on Sunday.

The Bavarians were in no mood to drop their energy or standards against the out-of-form hosts, with the strugglers now sitting just five points off the relegation playoff spot. An own goal from Georg Niedermeier set the wheels in motion as goals from David Alaba and Douglas Costa sandwiched Daniel Divadi's strike.

Recap

Stuttgart were little match for Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich on Saturday as the champions secured another three points in their title tilt. They now see their lead over closest rivals Borussia Dortmund stand at seven points after Thomas Tuchel’s draw 2-2 in the Revierderby against Schalke.

Defender Neidermeier handed Bayern an advantage half an hour into the contest as he put the ball past his own goalkeeper. Frack Ribery’s trickery down the left flank turned two defenders inside-out before whipping a low ball across the six-yard box that the German centre-back attempted to block.

Following the interval, Alaba extended the leaders’ lead to 2-0 as he turned well inside the box and struck his shot into the corner. The hosts pulled a goal back through Daniel Didavi with a cheeky chip with 20 minutes still to play, but Brazilian winger Costa sealed all three points in the final minute. Cutting inside from the right wing, he unleashed a powerful drive that Przemyslaw Tyton was unable to keep out.

Thomas Muller has been in superb form in recent weeks and despite not adding his name to the scoresheet, he played a key role supplying his fellow attackers.

In the Ruhr derby, Schalke halted Dortmund’s charge at the title by holding them to a 2-2 draw at Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen. Shinji Kagawa put the visitors ahead four minutes into the second half, but the scoreboard was level just six minutes later when youngster Leroy Sane found the back of the net.

Matthias Ginter put BVB ahead once more midway through the second period, but Schalke refused to lie down and equalised for the second time from the penalty spot through Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

None of the Bundesliga’s top-scoring strikers found the back of the net in week 29, with Muller, Robert Lewandowski and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all firing blanks. Javier Hernandez added to his tally, however, scoring in the 2-0 win over Cologne to take his tally to 15 goals in the league this term.

Former Chelsea recruit Salomon Kalou enhanced his goal haul for the season by one with a late equalising strike for Hertha  over basement club Hannover.

Bayern remain on course to lift another league title this year after holding off their sole threat Dortmund. Meanwhile, the fight for third spot in the rankings is hotting up, with several clubs closing in on the final automatic Champions League qualification place.

Hertha are leading the race on 49 points but face competition from Leverkusenone point behindand Gladbach, Mainz and Schalke all on 45. At the bottom of the table, Hannover are almost certain of relegation, despite picking up a point this weekend to take their tally to 18. Frankfurt, Werder Bremen, Augsburg and Hoffenheim are all fighting it out to avoid the second automatic-relegation spot.
