Recap
The Upton Park faithful were in a foul mood early on Saturday after goals from Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez pushed Arsenal into a 2-0 lead, and youngster Alex Iwobi was once again pulling strings for the Gunners.
But Carroll's eight-minute intervention—consisting of one volleyed finish and two headers either side of the break—thrust the Hammers into a 3-2 lead after 52 minutes. Injuries have ravaged the England striker in recent years, but BT Sport pundit Ian Wright hailed Carroll as an elite, unique talent:
Laurent Koscielny snatched a 70th-minute equaliser for manager Arsene Wenger, and the Frenchman's side, now 10 points off leaders Leicester City, may be forced to admit their title dream is over.
Speaking to the media after the draw, Wenger admitted his surprise at seeing Carroll in West Ham's starting XI, adding the forward was "lucky to finish the game," per James Benge of the London Evening Standard:
"He’s good in the air. I believe as well we lost a bit of urgency when we were 2-0 up, we had a good game today but a bad result. It’s been a weakness we’ve had throughout the season. If you look at the goals we’ve conceded throughout the year it’s been headers in our box and that happened today.
He was lucky to finish the game but that doesn’t mean we have to concede goals on the headers if he stays on the pitch. We have to look at ourselves, we cannot influence the decision of the referee. I believe that overall yes he was lucky.
"
In the evening clash, Manchester City came from a goal down to defeat West Brom, 2-1, at the Etihad Stadium after Stephane Sessegnon fired the visitors into a shock lead after just six minutes.
Aguero converted a penalty to equalise and record his 18th goal of the league campaign before Nasri completed the turnaround with his strike on 66 minutes, ending an agonising drought, per Sky Sports Statto:
The Citizens climbed to within two points of third-placed Arsenal as a result of their hard-fought win, but another recent Premier League champion, Chelsea, didn't fare as well in their visit to the Liberty Stadium.
Without a suspended Diego Costa, Chelsea mustered just two shots on target, per WhoScored.com, as a Gylfi Sigurdsson volley separated the two teams, leaving the Standard little option but to rate the Blues players poorly in their attempt:
Alexandre Pato made his first start for the west Londoners in Costa's absence, Matt Miazga and Ruben Loftus-Cheek also earned rare starts and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was dropped in favour of Asmir Begovic.
Southampton capitalised upon boasting a far more settled XI this season, and their slender vision of a European finish may not be over just yet following their win over Newcastle.
Shane Long, Graziano Pelle and Victor Wanyama provided the goals as Magpies manager Rafa Benitez continues to wait on his first win at Newcastle. Bleacher Report UK took the occasion to illustrate the axed Real Madrid chief's swift transition from La Liga contender to Premier League relegation candidate:
Watford and Everton ran to a 1-1 draw at Vicarage Road after James McCarthy and Jose Holebas each netted prior to the break, and Jason Puncheon's sole effort paved Palace's way to a 1-0 victory over Norwich at Selhurst Park.
Villa's despondent form continued with a 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth, where Steve Cook and Joshua King forced the Cherries two goals ahead before Jordan Ayew grabbed a consolation with five minutes to go.
