On-Song Carroll Cuts Arsenal Down to Size
In just his third Premier League start of 2016, West Ham wonder Carroll almost single-handedly brought about Arsenal's demise on Saturday after the Gunners raced into an initial 2-0 lead.
Two pinpoint headers and a bullet volley saw the injury-plagued powerhouse scorch three past the north Londoners, something no player had pulled off since Wayne Rooney in 2011, according to OptaJoe:
Aaron Cresswell and Michail Antonio provided the crosses for Carroll's first and third goals, respectively, while his second was a more independent effort goalkeeper David Ospina had little chance of stopping.
Speaking to BT Sport after the result, Carroll confessed this summer's European Championship is still a target for him, and he'll have been banking on England manager Roy Hodgson giving his display some attention:
Not since last season has former Newcastle and Liverpool frontman Carroll had the fitness to have an extended run in this West Ham team, but manager Slaven Bilic reaped the benefits of his towering presence on Saturday.
Who's to say what Carroll can accomplish if his bothersome knees hold up from now until the end of the season?
Sigurdsson and Pelle Storm Top-Scorer Gates

While Kane and Vardy didn't have the chance to advance their scoring campaigns on Saturday, Sigurdsson and Pelle advanced on the top-scorer places following goals against Chelsea and Newcastle, respectively.
Sigurdsson's 25th-minute volley—his 11th strike of the season—was particularly telling in Swansea's 1-0 win over the Blues. BBC Wales Sport noted the three-point haul ensured the club's top-flight status for another season:
Meanwhile, Pelle scored the second in the Saints' 3-1 victory over the Magpies, and manager Rafa Benitez watched as his Newcastle side finished miles off the pace, arguably fortunate not to lose by more.
The Italy forward recently went through something of a midseason lull in form, but he's since hit back with some ferocious displays of late, and his strike against Newcastle kept up a hot streak in attack:
The striker fell to the ground after darting into the Newcastle area, before collecting himself to thunder home a low-driving effort in the 38th minute to help seal the tie.
Shane Long and Victor Wanyama provided the other strikes for Southampton, but manager Ronald Koeman's side always look like a more dangerous outfit when Pelle in particular is at his best.
