Arsenal raced into a 2-0 lead through Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, but Carroll scored three goals in quick succession either side of half-time to give the Hammers a 3-2 lead.
The first and third goals were trademark headers at the back post, while Carroll showed a great deal of improvisation to notch his second with a flying volley. WhoScored.com revealed the three-goal haul was his first in over five years:
The hat-trick was also the first conceded by Arsenal since 2011, per Opta Joe:
It was a swinging cross from left-back Aaron Cresswell that gave Carroll the tools to net his first, and the searching ball found the striker's head at the far post, leaving Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina rooted.
That goal trickled inside the Colombian's post, but West Ham's second of the afternoon was far more assured. The Gunners were left red-faced with their marking after Carroll was permitted to chest down a cross—this time from the right flank—inside the area before having two snaps at the ball with seconds remaining in the first period.
Ospina was helpless to prevent the Englishman's deflected, left-footed effort after Carroll saw an initial half-volley blocked, but the stopper was partly to blame for the third, which saw Arsenal fall behind for the first time in the match.
Arseblog showed the Arsenal 'keeper was mostly behind his own goal line after Michail Antonio sprinted down the right flank and clipped a cross over to the back post, where none other than Carroll was on hand to convert:
Carroll was a constant danger throughout the clash at Upton Park, and three goals later, fans were calling for him to be in England’s UEFA Euro 2016 squad. Broadcaster Ian Abrahams led the charge:
Speaking to BT Sport after the draw, Carroll himself added that earning a place in the squad is certainly among his priorities, and this performance will have reminded England manager Roy Hodgson of what he could bring to the table:
The striker would certainly be a good option for Hodgson if he elects to take a Plan B, and he did his chances of making the squad the world of good on Saturday.
On his day, Carroll can be unplayable—just ask Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel Paulista.
