La Liga Results 2016: Full Table, Title Odds and Scores After Final Week 31 Game

Matt JonesApr 4, 2016

La Liga’s bottom side, Levante, missed the chance to make up ground in the race to avoid relegation on Monday, as fellow strugglers Sporting Gijon held them to a 0-0 draw.

In inclement conditions in Valencia, the two teams struggled to capture an attacking spark. Levante had the better openings in the clash but had Zouhair Feddal sent off after the final whistle for a second bookable offence; they are now four points back on 17th-place Granada, while Gijon, who remain in 19th, are just a point from safety.

Here's a look at how the title odds stand after the weekend's games, a recap of Monday’s attritional affair at the Estadi Ciutat de Valencia and a reminder of how things panned out on a fascinating weekend in Spain’s top flight.

Monday Recap

Neither Levante nor Sporting will have been overly delighted with this result, as they each lost out on the chance to give themselves a survival boost at the expense of a positional rival.

For the hosts, they need to take opportunities like this—playing the team 19th in the league on home soil—if they’re to haul themselves to safety. And it was no surprise that in torrential rain it was coach Rubi’s players who began with the more attacking intent.

Victor Camarasa had a fine chance to open the scoring with a header in the opening exchanges. But he didn’t connect properly, and the effort looped over the bar.

The conditions made it hard for any team to settle into an attacking pattern, and as half-time approached, most of the action centered around a midfield battle. But a lack of guile in possession from both sides meant it was goalless at the break.

The rain got heavier and heavier as the contest got back underway in the second period. Sports journalist Russell Clarke was shocked by just how wet it was getting out there:

Chances came more freely, though, and Levante star Giuseppe Rossi had the most clear openings of the game in a frantic spell.

All the Italy international had to do from a devilish cross was nod home, but he didn’t get enough on the ball to send it past goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar. Then, after a shot landed at his feet in the area, Rossi failed to connect cleanly, allowing Gijon to clear.

Next it was the turn of Victor Casadesus to go close, as he struck the bar with the clock ticking down. Sporting were clinging on at this juncture, although they eventually got to full time with their clean sheet intact.

Overall, it was a frustrating night for the home side, epitomised by Feddal’s fume at the match official after the final whistle. As noted by AS English, the defender didn’t hold back:

At the other end of the table, Barcelona’s lead at the summit decreased to seven points, as they fell to defeat against Real Madrid in the Clasico at the Camp Nou on Saturday.

A thrilling second period saw Gerard Pique put the home side in front, but a stunning equaliser from Karim Benzema levelled things up. Then Sergio Ramos received his marching orders for a second yellow card, although that didn’t prevent Cristiano Ronaldo from bagging a late winner for his side.

As noted by OptaJose, it’s a game in which the Portuguese always seems to find his best form:

The standout performers of the weekend were arguably Atletico Madrid, though, who are the team in closest contact with Barcelona.

Revered for their defensive solidity, manager Diego Simeone’s side showed they have attacking flair too, as they romped to a brilliant 5-1 win over Real Betis on Saturday.

Once again, Antoine Griezmann starred in attack for Atleti, as he bagged a couple in this rout. Jack Rathborn of uMAXit Football is anticipating a big finish to the season from the Frenchman:

Villarreal are the team looking increasingly likely to join the Madrid giants and Barcelona in the top four, as they tightened their grip on a Champions League spot with a 2-1 win at Eibar on Sunday. They’re now nine points clear of Sevilla, who on Sunday suffered a shock home defeat to Real Sociedad, and eight ahead of Celta Vigo, who toiled to a 1-1 draw with Deportivo in the Galician derby on Saturday.

While Barcelona’s loss does make matters a tiny bit more exciting at the top, the entertainment in La Liga in the final weeks of the season is set to come at the bottom. Just three points separate Sporting in 19th and Rayo Vallecano in 16th, and with Levante three adrift in 20th, this draw represented huge opportunity missed in their survival battle.
