Tyjon Lindsey Tweets Top 10: Which Schools Have Best Shot to Land 5-Star WR?

Tyler DonohueApr 1, 2016

Wide receiver Tyjon Lindsey, a primary target for college football programs throughout his high school career, trimmed a lengthy list of options to 10 schools Thursday night.

The 5-star recruit, rated No. 5 nationally among players at the position in 247Sports' 2017 composite rankings, tweeted this collection of universities:

A short video reel reveals Alabama, Auburn, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas A&M and USC as universities still in the mix. Lindsey also made it clear that the door is closed on other contenders.

"I'll be shutting down my recruiting process to these 10 only," he wrote.

The 5'8.5", 180-pound prospect feels now is an appropriate time to enter a new phase of his nationwide recruitment. Suitors such as Arizona State, Louisville, Oklahoma, UCLA and Washington were among many that didn't make the cut.

"I just wanted to take the load off of me," Lindsey told Wesley Sinor of AL.com. "These schools that I have in my list, I have good connections with the coaches and I like the way they produce their wide receivers. I look at it and how it will benefit me—not just in sports, but also the academic aspect."

Considered the No. 21 overall player in this cycle, Lindsey transferred to Centennial High School in Corona, California, earlier this year. Though he started high school in San Diego County, Lindsey built his elite reputation at Las Vegas powerhouse Bishop Gorman High School.

He collected 79 receptions for 2,001 yards and 29 touchdowns during 30 straight Bishop Gorman victories the past two seasons, per MaxPreps. Those passes came courtesy of 5-star quarterback Tate Martell; their close friendship dates back to middle school.

With a bond that borders on brotherhood, this duo continues to express interest in establishing themselves as a college duo. Martell, the country's top-rated dual-threat quarterback, received his first offer from Washington in seventh grade and committed to Texas A&M last August.

"We're like brothers, and I've always thought about going to college with him," Lindsey told Bleacher Report in February. "That's still something I think about, but all in all, it's my college decision, and I've got to do what's best for me. But Tate is always family, and we'll support each other no matter which paths we choose."

Martell was more assertive about the situation during a discussion at The Opening's Los Angeles regional camp, where both players punched their ticket to The Opening finals this summer at Nike's world headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.

"We'll be together in college. We'll figure it out," Martell said.

Naturally, Texas A&M emerges as a program to focus on because that's where Martell intends to play. Following the stunning transfers of Aggies quarterbacks Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray—both former 5-star prospects themselves—he believes there's an excellent opportunity to earn starting reps as a true freshman.

The Aggies appear on Lindsey's list, but it's Ohio State that commanded national attention most recently when it comes to Martell and Lindsey.

The Buckeyes hosted both on campus in March and already carry a commitment from Bishop Gorman defensive lineman Haskell Garrett. Lindsey, who has family in Ohio, admitted in February that his rapport with Ohio State's staff began budding from the start.

"It's been sparks flying with us since they first reached out," he said.

Lindsey was hosted on campus by freshman receiver Austin Mack, who enrolled early in January and has already drawn rave reviews from head coach Urban Meyer.

Perhaps to the agitation of Aggies fans, Martell also appeared to enjoy himself during a stay in Columbus. He shared family ties to Ohio State on Twitter:

Martell will return to Texas A&M on April 1 for the program's Friday Night Lights event and expressed intentions to help land new commitments in College Station. This visit is key for head coach Kevin Sumlin, as the Ohio State trip created major social media buzz about the stability of this pivotal pledge.

The prized passer declared public support for the staff in December, shortly after news broke of Murray and Allen's departures. "Texas A&M has all the right tools to be the most dominant school in college football. I haven't lost any confidence in the coaches," he wrote in a message posted to Twitter.

Lindsey and Martell also ventured to USC together in February for a junior day. Martell considered the Trojans his No. 2 choice behind the Aggies as a decision approached last summer, while Lindsey told Sinor he hears from the iconic nearby program more than any school.

The Trojans signed four of the top 30 wide receivers in the 2016 composite rankings, serving as a testament to recently promoted offensive coordinator Tee Martin.

"I just felt back at home [during USC junior day]. I felt comfortable, and it was an amazing experience," Lindsey said following his time in Los Angeles.

At this stage, things seem to be trending toward the Trojans if Lindsey decides to stay in his home state. Otherwise, Ohio State is in extremely strong shape as a possible landing spot beyond California's borders and should be in line to eventually host him for an official visit.

"I want to get back out there again when it's cold so if that's my college choice, I can understand what that weather is like," Lindsey said.

Oregon is another intriguing option that presents a West Coast alternative to USC, but keep a close eye on Auburn and Alabama. Lindsey told Sinor he "definitely" plans to package both campus visits into an upcoming and currently unscheduled journey into SEC territory.

Still 10 months shy of national signing day, we'd put Ohio State, USC and Texas A&M (primarily due to Martell's presence) slightly ahead of the pack when projecting how things shake out for this scintillating playmaker. But with seven other schools still in the picture, don't expect an early resolution to a widespread recruitment.
