Recap

Real Madrid came dangerously close to dropping more points in the Canary Islands, as an in-form Las Palmas squad gave Los Blancos everything they could handle. A first-half goal from Ramos appeared to be enough to secure all three points for a long time, but a wild finale had fans on the edge of their seats.

First, Willian Jose equalised for the hosts, before Casemiro gave the lead back to his side almost immediately afterwards. Bleacher Report UK couldn't believe it:

Ramos then managed to get himself sent off, setting up a nervy last couple of minutes, but fortunately for the giants from Madrid, the hosts were unable to take advantage.

Las Palmas sported an impressive and unexpected winning streak coming into the match, and from the opening minute they showed they were willing to play open, attacking football with Madrid.

Luka Modric looked uncharacteristically shaky in midfield, losing possession several times, and Las Palmas took full advantage, mustering several chances. But when Ramos opened the scoring after 24 minutes, it looked as if the visitors would cruise to another easy win.

As noted by Squawka Football, the defender has managed to score an impressive amount of goals during his career:

The hosts refused to just lay down and hand Real the win, however, and they kept the pressure on the Blancos defence. Pepe got booked in the second half, meaning he'll miss the match against Sevilla, and with minutes left to play, former Madrid striker Jose suddenly pulled his team level.

Las Palmas now seemed primed to record another upset, but a defensive error left Casemiro wide-open in the box, and he powered home his first goal for Real Madrid to grab the win.

There was still enough time for Ramos to earn his second yellow card and an early shower. As noted by ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan, he's as known for his red cards as his frequent goals:

As shared by Corrigan, manager Zinedine Zidane was far from satisfied with his team's performance:

Elsewhere, Cedric Bakambu's brace wasn't enough to see Villarreal past Sevilla, as the hosts walked out with a 4-2 win despite Ever Banega's red card.

Vicente Iborra, Yevheniy Konoplyanka and Jose Antonio Reyes all scored for the hosts, while Victor Ruiz was credited with an own goal as well.

The Yellow Submarine remain the favourites to grab La Liga's fourth UEFA Champions League ticket, but Sevilla suddenly find themselves within striking distance. They'll visit Real Madrid next week, while Villarreal will host Barcelona.

Even Athletic Bilbao suddenly seem alive in the race for fourth place after beating Real Betis, 3-1. As noted by OptaJose, the Basques set quite the mark in the process:

La Liga's top four seemed pretty much set just a few weeks ago, but with Villarreal playing an in-form Barcelona squad next week, things could change in a hurry. Real will be favourites at home against Sevilla, but the UEFA Europa League titleholders have looked very solid of late and will like their chances at the Bernabeu.
