Friday Recap
Sporting almost took the lead in the first minute when Antonio Sanabria fired on goal from a tight angle, but Guillermo Ochoa proved equal to the effort.
The hosts steadily grew into the game as Charles headed over, and Pablo Fornals dragged a long shot wide before they took the lead through Juanpi.
The Venezuelan picked up the ball on the edge of the area before cutting onto his left foot and unleashing a stunning effort into the top corner, per La Liga on Twitter:
Not only did the goal put Gijon behind, it also signalled they held an unwanted record, according to Opta Jose:
Jony came close to equalising for the visitors shortly before the break with a well-struck effort of his own, but his shot narrowly flew wide of the post.
Malaga pursued a second goal to consolidate their lead after the restart, but Roberto Rosales directed Gonzalo Castro's cross off-target and Recio was denied by Ivan Cuellar before heading wide.
Gijon created chances at the other end and forced two good saves from Ochoa, first from a Sanabria header and then Pablo Perez's close-range shot, but they were unable to find a way through.
The win takes Malaga to eighth in the table, and they can now begin to look up rather than over their shoulders, but they could have a difficult time against Real Betis in their next outing. As for Gijon, they remain in the relegation zone and look likely to stay there as they host Atletico Madrid next.
