Recap
Liverpool showed plenty of resilience to grab a win against Crystal Palace on Sunday, battling back from a one-goal deficit after Milner was sent off for his second bookable offence.
Manager Jurgen Klopp was understandably satisfied with what his team showed, per the club's official Twitter account:
Joe Ledley gave the hosts the lead early in the second half, and when Milner was sent off for a poor challenge on Wilfried Zaha, the Reds' situation looked desperate. Per OptaJoe, it marked just the second time in his Premier League career the England international ran into a red card.
But Firmino pulled his team level with just under 20 minutes to go, adding to his impressive tally since the turn of the year and setting up a frantic finale. In injury time, Damien Delaney made contact with Benteke in the box, and the Belgian striker converted the penalty himself, handing his team all three points.
The penalty was a little controversial, as the contact appeared minimal, but former professional footballer Alexi Lalas thought it was the right call:
The win takes Liverpool up to seventh place in the standings, but the Reds still have a match in hand. And with Manchester City struggling for consistency in 2016, the race for the fourth UEFA Champions League ticket suddenly appears wide open.
It would be some achievement if Klopp could guide the side to a top-four finish, but given the poor form the Reds were in toward the end of former manager Brendan Rodgers' tenure, qualification for the UEFA Europa League should already be considered a major success.
Rondon's second-half goal for the Baggies was enough to score an upset win over a hapless Manchester United squad, who produced one of their least inspiring outings of the season and now chase Manchester City by three points in the race for the Champions League.
Mata ran into two bookings in the space of just four minutes in the first half, and per Squawka Football, it marked the first time in his club career he was forced to take an early shower:
The absence of the Spanish passing wizard showed, as the Red Devils were bereft of any creativity throughout the match. In the second half, Rondon powered a smart finish past goalkeeper David De Gea, securing all three points for his club.
Unsurprisingly, pundits immediately pointed at manager Louis van Gaal. MailSport's Huw Bonello thought he already had his eyes on the upcoming Europa League match with Liverpool:
The Reds enter Thursday's clash with more momentum than their opponents, but form usually goes out of the window any time these two rivals meet. A loss against West Brom was hardly how United wanted to prepare for that pivotal match, but a win over Liverpool on Thursday would probably make fans forget all about Sunday's loss.
