Preview
In-form Spurs lead Arsenal by three points entering Saturday's contest, but their fantastic run in the Premier League came to an end in midweek when they lost 1-0 against West Ham United. The loss was a big blow for manager Mauricio Pochettino's troops as they wasted the opportunity to tie Leicester City at the top of the standings.
It's vital the setback doesn't turn into a slide, and Saturday's match will play a pivotal role in the title race. Not only do Spurs have the opportunity to put some distance between themselves and Arsenal, but a win would provide plenty of momentum heading into the final stretch of Premier League matches.
The players appear to be well aware of the significance of this match, and star striker Harry Kane didn't try to hide it:
Things are no different for Arsenal, who have lost two in a row in the league and suffered heartbreak against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League. A loss against their rivals wouldn't end their title bid, but with momentum slipping away, the Gunners need to turn things around in a hurry.
To make matters worse, star goalkeeper Petr Cech won't be available, as he's expected to miss up to a month with a calf injury, per SportsCenter. Fortunately, likely replacement David Ospina has more than held his own for the Gunners, via Sky Sports News HQ:
Manchester United were the big winners of the midweek fixtures, as all of the teams sitting above them in the standings dropped points. The Red Devils are currently tied on points with rivals Manchester City, but they face a difficult trip to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.
The Baggies held Leicester City to a draw in midweek, and they tend to play their best football against the top teams. Under manager Tony Pulis, their defence has looked solid against sides who like to dominate possession, and the Red Devils could find themselves up against a wall of defenders.
But a win is a must, with City expected to cruise past Aston Villa, and manager Louis van Gaal is desperate to keep his team's strong run going, per United's official Twitter account:
Chelsea are also on quite the run, steadily rising up the standings under interim manager Guus Hiddink, and they will host Stoke City on Saturday. Despite their horrendous start to the season, the Blues sit just eight points out of fourth place, and a ticket for next year's UEFA Champions League suddenly looks like a possibility.
Stoke have won three in a row in the league, and they'll present Chelsea with a big test at Stamford Bridge. The Potters are also pushing for European football, and a draw away at Chelsea would be a fantastic result for the team.
