"It's a good day for the Seattle Seahawks," quarterback Russell Wilson said, per Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times.
Carroll was set to enter the final season of his previous deal, so it made sense for Seattle to lock him up now to avoid questions about his future during the 2016 campaign.
The news comes just two days after the Seahawks gave general manager John Schneider an extension as well.
The 64-year-old coach has posted a 60-36 (.625) regular-season record across six years with Seattle. He led the franchise to the playoffs in five of those seasons, highlighted by two Super Bowl appearances, including a victory over the Denver Broncos at the end of the 2013 campaign.
ESPN Stats & Info added context to Carroll's achievements:
One of the reasons for that consistent success is the energy Carroll gets from his players. He might be in his 60s, but he acts like he's in his 40s or younger, and that rubs off on his players and creates a group that's tough to play against.
The former New York Jets and New England Patriots head coach discussed his bond with the team's fanbase after the 2015 season came to a close with a loss to the Carolina Panthers in January, as noted by Tony Drovetto of the team's official site:
"It was really obvious last night. They weren't just out there to see the buses come in. They went out there to pay tribute to the team that they love and in just classic 12 fashion. It was big time. A big-time demonstration from the airport all the way back to where we got back to the facility here. Like we've said, we have a great connection with our fans, and it's a very deep connection.
"
The outlook for the future remains bright, as well. The Seahawks have a franchise quarterback in Russell Wilson, and Seattle has surrounded him with plenty of talent, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Furthermore, the Seahawks have talented players waiting in the wings. Losing a key contributor such as running back Marshawn Lynch to retirement would be a major setback for most teams, but Seattle's Thomas Rawls showed last season he's capable of filling the void.
So Carroll and Co. should keep rolling in 2016 and beyond.
