Jerry Kill, Minnesota Part Ways: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction
Jerry Kill turned down what he called "a speaking and fundraising position" with the University of Minnesota, thus ending his time with the school, per Joe Christensen of the Star Tribune (h/t Mitch Sherman of ESPN.com).
Citing health reasons, Kill stepped down as the Golden Gophers football coach back in October.
Kill suffers from epilepsy and had a seizure on the sideline in 2011. He experienced another seizure following a Minnesota game in 2012.
"I don't want to be a liability. I don't want somebody to have to worry if I'm going to drop on the field," Kill said during the press conference announcing his immediate retirement, per Dave Campbell of the Associated Press. "I don't want to coach from the press box. I want to coach the way I've coached my whole life."
KFAN's Justin Gaard spoke with Big Ten Network's Dave Revsine about the impact Kill's retirement had on the team:
According to Christensen, Minnesota's interim athletic director, Beth Goetz, had discussed with Kill the possibility of him taking a different role with the school but failed to make any headway.
Kill didn't rule out the possibility that he could return to Minnesota for special occasions, telling Christensen, "If the university needs my help, I'm a phone call away."
