Louis Domingue Comments on Referees After Coyotes vs. Capitals

Mike NorrisFeb 22, 2016

Arizona Coyotes second-year goaltender Louis Domingue called out the referees after his team lost to Braden Holtby and the Washington Capitals, 3-2, on Monday.

According to Sarah McLellan of AZCentralSports.com (h/t Justin Cuthbert of The Score), Domingue took issue with one particular call in the third period. After it appeared as though Domingue had covered up the puck after stopping a shot, Mike Richards slapped it in for the game-deciding goal, and Domingue thought the veteran Holtby would have received the call in a similar situation, per McLellan:

"

I'm expecting that they treat every guy the same way, and I felt like because I don't have many games in this league I'm being treated differently. I think that if Holtby would have covered the puck this way, they would have blew the whistle right away.

All game it was the same thing. I didn't have the whistle.

It's just unacceptable that they don't treat us the same way.

Holtby, who is 139-57-21 in his career, owns the most wins in the NHL this season with 38, and the Capitals lead the league with 92 points. Domingue and the Coyotes are fourth in the Pacific Division with 60 points.

Kristen Shilton of USA Today noted how angry Domingue was after the non-call:

It was a judgment call, and the referees didn't think Domingue covered the puck long enough. It may be a stretch to say the officials were deliberately giving one team calls because it sported a better record.

However, in a one-goal loss, it is understandable for Domingue to be upset, but his comments won't change the outcome and could even lighten his wallet by the end of the week following a potential fine.
