Gregg Popovich Zings Cavaliers After Spurs' 30-Point Loss to Warriors

Kyle NewportJan 26, 2016

The Golden State Warriors made a statement with a 120-90 drubbing of the San Antonio Spurs in a battle of the NBA's best on Monday night.

Even after taking a beating like that, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich managed to be his typical witty self during his postgame media session—and had some fun at the Cleveland Cavaliers' expense.

The five-time champion joked, per Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports, that his job could have been in jeopardy after a loss like that:

Popovich is of course referencing the Cavaliers, a team that suffered a 34-point loss of its own to the Warriors just a week before the Spurs got blown out. According to Cleveland.com's Chris Fedor, Cleveland's locker room was closed to reporters for quite some time after that loss, leading to speculation that change could be imminent.

Coach David Blatt was relieved of his duties a few days later (after two more games, both wins). The firing caught some people by surprise, as Blatt had helped the Cavaliers get to the NBA Finals last season and had his team atop the Eastern Conference at 30-11 this year.

Popovich and other coaches around the league commented on Blatt's dismissal in the days after the news broke. However, the iconic Spurs coach apparently saved a zinger to break out at the opportune moment.

Never change, Popovich.
