Louis van Gaal: Latest News, Rumours on Manchester United Manager's Future
Manchester United "have shelved" their transfer plans for January in case under-fire manager Louis van Gaal doesn't survive this season or moves on in the summer.
David Anderson of the Daily Mirror reported the Old Trafford club is pushing the pause button on some ambitious transfer plans while Van Gaal's future remains uncertain:
"United's hierarchy also have growing doubts about the Dutchman's long-term position, and he will not survive at the Old Trafford giants if he does not deliver Champions League football for next season.
Club chiefs' concerns over Van Gaal's future have increased in recent weeks, prompting them to place their big deals on the back-burner.

Anderson noted the uncertainty regarding Van Gaal forced the Red Devils to back off signing Lazio's attacking midfielder Felipe Anderson. The Brazilian is one of many stars United were reportedly targeting, along with Real Madrid's Gareth Bale.

United are concerned Van Gaal's potential successor won't want to work with any big-money signings made this month—and a successor is a distinct possibility.
Anderson cited ex-Chelsea gaffer Jose Mourinho, Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone and Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola as targets to replace the Dutchman. French source L'Equipe (h/t Metro's George Bellshaw) reported the Reds have even met with Guardiola to discuss the possibility of succeeding Van Gaal.

Van Gaal is suffering with United fifth in the Premier League, and missing out on UEFA Champions League football next season would be enough to seal the Dutchman's fate, according to Anderson.
David McDonnell of the Daily Mirror reported Van Gaal could even walk away from Old Trafford a year early. Citing unnamed sources in Holland, McDonnell stated, "The Dutchman’s family have become increasingly concerned at the heavy toll leading the Old Trafford giants is taking on the 64-year-old."
The uncertainty surrounding Van Gaal makes United's hesitance in the winter market understandable. Many fans have not warmed to his rigid and pedestrian style of play, and his brand of football hasn't produced results.
United's squad needs major improvements, particularly in attacking areas. But it seems as though a new manager will be the one to buy the reinforcements.
