Speaking of impressive form, Dimitri Payet was back to his best as West Ham United beat Bournemouth. Elsehwere, bottom-placed Aston Villa earned a very rare win.

Georginio Wijnaldum, 8 Goals

Wijnaldum struck again for the Magpies to help get them back into things against the Red Devils. He's been a rare bright spot for Newcastle this season.

Trailing 2-0, the Dutchman made a well-timed run to meet Aleksandar Mitrovic's knock-down. His finish was typically smart to thwart United goalkeeper David De Gea.

Clever movement and classy finishing have very quickly become the hallmarks of Wijnaldum's game since he arrived in the Premier League. The attacking midfielder's form will be the key to the rest of Newcastle's season.

Speaking of key, that's just what Rooney remains for the men from Manchester. He struck his and United's first from the spot. Squawka noted the goal's significance in United's season:

But Paul Dummett's equaliser denied Rooney's excellent performance the three points it merited.

Elsehwere, Payet inspired West Ham to maximum points. The intelligent forward found the net and turned provider for the team that moved above United into fifth place.

OptaJoe revealed how influential Payet has been in the attacking third this season:

His skill and craft helped Enner Valencia bag a brace to cancel out Harry Arter's opener for the Cherries. The Hammers have been superb away from home all season. It's carried them to the brink of the top four.

Aston Villa would simply settle for climbing off the foot of the table. That will have to wait, even though Joleon Lescott's winner against Crystal Palace is a huge boost.

It's been a while since Villa experienced the winning feeling:

The table has an unfamiliar look with United so far out of the top four reckoning. It speaks to major problems for manager Louis van Gaal.

As for Villa boss Remi Garde, he'll welcome his first league win, but he'll also know how much work lies ahead if his team is going to beat the drop.
