Barclays Premier League Table: 2016 EPL Roundup After Week 21 Tuesday Results

Tom SunderlandJan 12, 2016

West Ham United moved into the Premier League's top five on Tuesday after coming back from a goal down to beat Bournemouth 3-1. Meanwhile, Aston Villa defeated Crystal Palace 1-0 for their first win since August, and Manchester United were left to settle for a 3-3 draw at Newcastle United in an end-to-end affair.

Enner Valencia netted twice for the Hammers as they continued their climb through the English top flight, and Joleon Lescott was the hero for manager Remi Garde's Villa after securing their first win since the opening day of the season.

United captain Wayne Rooney was at the double for the Red Devils too, but his brace wasn't enough to secure the win after a 90th-minute screamer from Paul Dummett clinched Newcastle a point on home turf.

Recap

Manchester United's frustrations endured despite a breakout display from captain Rooney, who bagged a brace at St James' Park as Jesse Lingard made a scoring return to manager Louis van Gaal's starting lineup.

It was a performance of mixed feelings as the visitors showed more fervour and passion in attack than has been seen of late at Old Trafford, but twice let the lead slip to gift hosts Newcastle a route back into the match.

Rooney netted his first from the penalty spot before cutting Lingard in down the left side of Rob Elliot's box, and the youngster made no mistake as he established a 2-0 lead on his comeback outing.

Georginio Wijnaldum cut the deficit to 2-1 with a 42nd-minute volley set up by the head of striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, but that didn't stop ex-United midfielder Paul Scholes from telling BT Sport of his praise for the guests:

United's first half was fast and furious, but the second period was anything but as Mitrovic got on the scoresheet himself with a spot-kick in the 67th minute after he was wrestled down by Chris Smalling in the box.

The best was saved for last, though, and Rooney thought he'd won it for United after rasping his second of the game into Elliot's top left from the edge of the box, only for Dummett to eclipse that effort with a timely wonder strike of his own. ESPN's Richard Jolly noted this wasn't Van Gaal's first 3-3 with the Red Devils:

West Ham were more than happy to capitalise upon that drama with a 3-1 win at Dean Court, where there were also a couple of peachy finishes of which to take note.

Republic of Ireland international Harry Arter broke the deadlock with a long-range effort to beat Hammers No. 1 Adrian, only for Dimitri Payet and Valencia to hit back in terrific fashion. The former Marseille man equalised with a wonderful curling free-kick, and OptaJoe illustrated his importance to manager Slaven Bilic's side in his maiden Premier League term:

The heroics didn't end there, though, and Payet executed some magical dribbling on the right flank, scything in to set Valencia up for his first strike as West Ham clinched a 2-1 lead.

If Payet's free-kick was good, his Ecuadorian attack partner was evidently adamant to beat it, and Goal's Jay Jaffa referred to his set piece to make it 3-1 as "Ronaldo-esque":

The drama was nonstop in those two clashes, but Villa Park made for a much more tense venue on Tuesday evening as Garde's men edged Palace 1-0 to move within eight points of 17th-place Sunderland.

It may not sound like a grand achievement, but three points and a clean sheet will have been like music to the ears of any Villan. Infostrada's Simon Gleave didn't understate the hand Eagles No. 1 Wayne Hennessey played in the goal, however, dropping Lescott's header between his own feat in a horrible gaffe:

A second win of the campaign means Villa are now eight points from climbing out of the bottom three with 17 games remaining, but a win against top-half opposition will give them new hope in their quest for survival.

West Ham's climb into the top five means the east London outfit can again begin to dream of European qualification, while United's chances of a Champions League place have been stunted again.
